Show THE POPULIST CONVENTION The Weber county convention of the Peoples party was called to order yesterday yes-terday afternoon in the district courtroom court-room by G W Clark of the Third Ogden precinct Chairman Zinn being absent All the Ogden wards and about half the county precincts were represented S S Smith was named as temporary chairman and llrs H C Smith secretary Committees on credentials permanent perma-nent organization and order of business busi-ness and resolutions were appointed and pending their report James Mc Farland addressed the forty or fifty delegates and the seven spectators present lie began with the beginning of the history of the Aryan race and was down to the period of Cromwell when the committees returned and his speech was somewhat abbreviated The permanent officers were S S Smith chairman and Mrs Kate Hil hard secretary The resolutions committee reported a set of resolutions reaffirming allegiance to the Omaha platform in its entirety demanding the free and unlimited coinage of sliver at the ratio of 16 to 1 without regard to other nations The issue of currency by the national banks and the issuance of bonds were condemned con-demned The actions of the Populist members in congress on all occasions were endorsed A reduction of the salaries of county officers was demanded de-manded and the practice of paying salaries to deputies for work which should be dene by officers was disapproved disap-proved of The latter clause evoked considerable consider-able discussion W C Sumner of the Fourth ward opposed it ina vigorous speech in which he declared that the salaries of county officials were already ready low enough and that the fee sys tern was the evil to strike out The resolutions finally passed as reported re-ported Considerable delay was occasioned by arguments over the best method of selecting delegates various plans being be-ing presented and discussed Mr Bar rett of Wilson said the plan of having precinct delegations nominate two members would force him to nominate himself twice Are there not more people in Wilson asked Mr Gaut Yes said Mr Barrett but they would not go to Salt Lake I could not get any of them to come here with me Finally thirtyseven members were named and from this number twenty six were chosen togo to the state con ventiop |
