Show Brigham Young College LOGAN June 5The exercises of the t eighteenth annual commencement of the Brigham Young college were held J today in the Thatcher opera house The 1 graduating class for 9G consists of < twenty persons sixteen gentlemen and i four ladles Arthur Porter of Logan S completed seven years work in the pS college and received a baccalaureate degree in general science Fourteen completed a threeyears normal course + and five a fouryear academic course t The opera house was packed with f friends of the college and its graduates The programme rendered was of a lIe pleasing character the addresses valedictory vale-dictory and otherwise were convincing proof of the general excellence of the college and its methods of instruction A number of excellent musical excelent exercises exer-cises both vocal and instrumental enlivened The occasion An eloquent invocation wa made by Professor O F WbJtney address Habit in Education l Edu-cation by Frank Wilbert oran of Idaho Falls was full of merit Charles David Goaslind of Franklin delivered an interesting address on the life of 81 Paul Religious Training in the School was ably handled by Graduate Gradu-ate A H Archibald of Clarkston The Causes and Effects of the Crusades Cru-sades by Edwin W Fifleld of Wes ton Idaho was next Joseph Smart Parkinson of Franklin treated The Rise of Puritanism and the Wan derings of the Pilgrims and finally George Willis Skidmore the valedic torian made an excellent address President George W Thatcher of the board of trustees a the college con ferred the degrees and certificates upon the graduates closing a very in teresting and instructive occasion The alumni banquet and ball occur this tis evening Cards are out for a double wedding wedIng to ocur on Wednesday June 17 1S96 at the residence of Bishop Henry Ballard of Logan Second ward The high contracting parties are Melvin J Ballard and Mattie Jones and Louis S Cardon and Rebecca Ballard all of whom are well known young people in this city During commencement exercises in the opera house this morning the fire alarm bell rang creating considerable excitement The conflagration proved to b of small proportions a blaze in the Seventh ward At a meeting of the Logan Sports mens club new officers were elected to serve during the ensuing year a follows President William Edwards vicepresident vIceprsIdet Robert McCulloch secretary sec-retary and treasurer X W Haws executive board T H Lewis H J Carlisle and J C Green a committee was also appointed to revise the rules and bylaws ot the society conformable to the new fish and game law and apother meeting appointed for next Monday evening at Lewis Edwards Edwars furniture store at 8 oclock p m The county court has remedied the defect in the new law allowing half the fine imposed on violators of implse the law togo to-go to the informer This is the result of the labors of the county fish and game warden Thomas H Lewis |
