Show HIGGINS REELEIYPED Defeats George Luft By a JIajority of SixtyOne MERCUR Utah June The annual election for a recorder for Camp Floyd district took place today C C Higgins Hig-gins being reelected by a majority of 61 I The only candidates were Higgins I and George Luft the latter being the genial and popular proprietor of the Mercur drug store The election was a quiet one but stubbornly contested by both candidates candi-dates and the extent of the interest taken was verified by the fact that 287 votes were cast The judges ruled that no one was competent to vote who had not been a claimholder in the district for at least forty days prior to the day of election and because of this ruling the Luft contingent is talking of contesting the election of Higgins The city officers and city council were sworn in today and In consequence conse-quence theeof and to show their appreciation ap-preciation of the honor bestowed upon them they will give a grand inaugural ball at the Mercur Opera house next Thursday evening It is more than probable that an excursion from Salt Lake will b2 announced for that date and a cordial invitation to attend the ball is hereby extended to all Salt Lakers who are the friends of our new city government The dance is free anda right royal time is anticipated I was learned today that the Ophir Hill miners about thirty in number had struck because of the reduction in hours and pay the owner of the mine A G Campbell being only wlll ing to give 25 cents an hour for an eighthour shift I is understood tonight to-night however that the men will go back to work at 240 a day until the 1st of the month when i is believed they will get 250 per day The Northern Light is shipping ore regularly The silver ore carries as high as 200 ounces in the white metal grade to the ton while the gold ore is high S |
