Committee of Utah Less than one year ago Irs O J Salisbury called together a number of ladles to form a committee In Utah to I secure funds for the George Washington Washing-ton Memorial association Today we cnn meet assured of the fact that the work has been accomplished More money than we had expected has been raised and we have succeeded 1n arcuslng the interest of all citizens ot the state As members of this committee com-mittee we should feel an honorable pride In the complete success of our effort In the light of this perfect achievement It Is hard for us to remem ber that when the committee first began be-gan its labors the result did not seem I at all certain One thousand dollars ocmed up large and threatening before our eyes and we feared that we could not achieve so much There was much t do to educate public sentiment To many it seemed that so large a sum shculd not be sent out or the state for I eucatonal purposes others objected to callIng upon the school children for small contributions still others could see no use In founding a new Insttu ton when the country already contained contain-ed 50 many fine universities During the frt hal year of its work the com I mite was obliged to spend onehalf I of its time in counteracting adverse Influence in-fluence The committee should feel a sense of victory over opposition as tel as a pride in this result of its Ia bars IThe committee as first formed last November had the following officers Mrs O J Salisbury chairman Mrs Cjarence E Allen vice chairman Miss Hester Harkness secretary Mrs F J I Fabian treasurer Mrs E D Wells press representative The following ladles have acted upon the committee Mrs M C Fox Mrs G M Downey Mrs M S Woodward Mrs George A Lowe Mrs William Jennings Mrs C W Bennett Mrs G Y Wallace Mrs drone and everyone has rendered some marked service I Is a mater that should be recorded that there has not been from first to last the smaIe t friction In the committee All our de lberatons have been harmonious and each one has been bent upon the success suc-cess of the cause rather than upon personal per-sonal preferences or opinions The com mltEe should gratefully acknowledge to Mrs Salisbury their indebtedness for the wise way In which all plans for work were laid out In the first part of January the vice chairman received word from Mrs Salisbury isbury then In New York that it WM the wish of the central committee that the 22nd of February should be made I day of collection throughout the country coun-try and If possible the school children should be induced to give their mite to the general fund The committee was called together immediately and the idea laid before them I is a pleasure pleas-ure to recall the promptness with which our Utah committee endorsed this plan The wisdom of the Idea was Immei ately recognized and at the first session we laid compete plans for carrying out the scheme Committees were appointed ap-pointed to Interview our chief officials In state and school to secure their co operation The goernor of the state promised his support the state super jintendent of schools gave consent to the collection being taken In the schools or the state the board qf education In I Sal Lake also allowed the collection I Is true tat all of this was not a I compUshed without some hard wQrk but nothing Is worth winning which does not require effort Th consent or officials having ben given the work remained wIth the committee to provide for taking up the collection As I ground work ot public sentiment UPOI which to build we issued Is-sued an address to the citizens ot the state whIch was published in ever paper pa-per and sent out by hundreds to prnl p nent citizens ot the state Letters were sent to every county superIntendent r questing him to direct the teachers under un-der him to tae up the collection Special Spe-cial letters wtre sent to each teacher through th county superintendent and i50 of these letter were typewritten by 11s Margaret N Cane and Miss Ida Michel a work which the com mitee should appreciate highly Logan was visited by r Margaret A Caine In the interests of the com mitte and Cache county thus came forward with a large contribution The vice chairman visited Ogden and found the ground already prepared by r T A Vhaen committeewoman for OS den The schools of Salt Lake City took up their collection authorized by the city superintendent following out the acton of the board The work of attending to the cole tons In the schools has been very heavy The work of the secretary Miss Harkness reached large proportions but the chief burden has fallen upon our treasurer Mrs F J Fabian The S90 reported from the school collection has been collected In small sums and the work of acknowledging amounts acknowegng received has been very large The response re-sponse of the school children to the appeal of the committee was very gnat l1ng One thousand two hundred In Qh1dual certificates for subscriptions have been issued by the committee Almost Al-most every school district reporting showed a contribution from the teacher teach-er and It Is sure that the committee are greatly indebted to the teachers of the state for their sympathetic interest In the cause A colonIal reception was given at the house or fr C M sven defray the necessary expenses of the committee commit-tee In postage and stationery This event was a complete success and as sisted Yen much In helping to form a public sentiment favorable t our cause In this city During the summer r Salisbury resigned her chairmanship of the committee and I was appointe o successor I accepted the position with hesitation as I felt that the work she beg should have her official leadership leader-ship to its completion fr Sal bUrs service has been recognized by the national committee by her election as national vice president Our final efort to complete Uths quota of money has been a complete success Eerrthlngha contributed to the Jlh The prosme for the en tertalnmm was made very attractive so the tctets sold readily The paper by Captain Ducat was of marked literary erar merit as well as of dramatic interest In-terest The music furnished was of a high order and the recitation of the Recessional was eminent appropriate appropri-ate The Qecoratons were strikingly beautiful and the occasion altogether one long to be remembered Mention should also be made ot the successful guessing contest under the i charge of Mrs Louise Smedley Smith What we have accomplshed by this unIted effort seems to me to be typical typi-cal of what might be done for worthy causes here at home There are many interests In Salt Lake suffering for just such hearty efficient work a we have put upon this George Washing ton memorial I hope that our success In this cause may be taken a a type of what the women of Utah are going to aemplsh In many lines In the near future Thanking the committee one and all for their hearty coperUon
