Show MISS BERTHA LAW Given Into the Custody of Mrs Ratta Callahan By an order of the court made by Jude Hues yesterday Bertha G Law i led 15 on her own motion was taken from the custody of her mother Mrs Luna Clark and given into the care and keeping of Mrs 1etta Callahan until the becomes of ae Berthas petition was filed in the vclate court some time ago and was partly heard a week ago last Saturday Satur-day Miss Bertha alleged that her mother treated her with extreme cru I eky flequcnUy beating her and call i lug her vile names and compelling her to visit houses of illrepute for the purpose of obtaining washing I At the hearing yesterday Judge H P Hendnson prescnted Mrs Clark who i resisted the petition of her daughter an Jude Anderson represented Irs Callahan and the girl Judge Henderson made a statement Ito I-to the effect that after diligent inquiry I he had come to the conclusion that con I I slderalle illfeelIng existed between I I j 5 the mother and daughter and that Mrs I lark was prepared toallow her daughter I daugh-ter to eave home provided a fit and I propEr Ierson was appointed by the court to take care of her The mother I did not want oIls Callahan appointed I for the reason that she did not believe she was the right kind of person The following named witnesses were examined all of whom testified to the good character of Mrs Callahan and the girl and the cruel treatment accorded ac-corded the latter by her mother Isaac A Hancock Mrs Nettle Sheffield Nd Ill Franks W D CIne and General Penrose The girl was recalled to the stand and in answer to Judge Henderson F said she had attended school in Colorado Colo-rado and the Fremont Twelfth and Oquirrh schools of this city denied any wrongdoing and said her mother conduct had caused her to lose all respect re-spect for her She didnt want to be sent to the Rescue home Mrs Dr Plummer was called and stated the objects of the Rescue mission mis-sion one of which was to take care of ftlllen women JUdge Anderson asked Mrs Plummer if she didnt think It would be detrImental to the morals of a young girl to come in contact with women of that class The Itnss replied i re-plied that It undoubtedly would but I such a thing as their coming in contact I with each other was barely IJOsslble at the home I Mrs Clark was then called and told I a long story of what she had heard respecting the character of oIls Calla I ban and what her girl had told her I Her story was denied by Mrs Calia b han and the girl after which Judge HUes granted the petiton at the same I time stating that if at any future time Mrs Clark could show that Mrs Calia han was not a proper person to have the care of the child the order would I 1e hanged |
