Show CARPETBAG ABBOTT AND UINTAH LANDS Vernal Utah Oct 21 To the Editor of The Herald In the Trtbune of the 19th there ap poared an article under the caption Kings Difficult Task which purported to be an interview with Secretary Abbot of the Uintah commission which owing to the imoontance of the subject under consIderation can hardly be allowed to pass unnoticed The gentleman first takes exception to the reported statement of Judge King that the delay in the opening of the reser ration is duo to the dilatory tactics of the commissioners and replIes by saying that the ommission has facilitated matters as much as possible all of which the people of Uiatnh county be lievo to be true as it will be readily ad mttted that that carpetbag organization lacks the energy or fitness to facilitate anything to any great extent When Judge King and Senator Rawlins expressed their disappointment at the results of the commissions work they simply voiced a sentiment that has been a convictIon with the people of this see tion as concerns any commission tbgt has ever been sent to treat with the Indians j is the universal belief among the people of this section that the commis don cares very little whether the reser vatlon Is opened for the next 20 years as long as the appropriations hold out and the Republican party is at the helm 1en who know and uoderstand the In diane better than the Uintah commission ever will know them say that the Indiana In-diana are favorable to the opening of the reservation if properly approached on the matter and by the right kind of men but that they look with contempt and suspicion upon that class of papsuckers who never do anything more than play for time Tho whole tenor of this man Abbots remarks simply confirms the impression that has existed heretoltre here that the commission Is not at all anxious to bring tho matter to a successful issue as that would temporarily close the door against them that leads to the public cribThe The gentieman charges Senator Rawlins and Judge King with making promises which they knew they would be unable to fulfiui ccncerning the openIng of the renertation The fact of the matter is that these gentlemen were fully aware of the obstacles to overcome in the way of a Republican administration with its carpetbag commissioners and simply contented themselves by saying that they would do all that lay in their pdwer to hasten the event The gentleman further says The reservation question is one of particular interest to the people of Lintah county where both Senator Rawhins and Con gressnattn King have made speeches dun ing the past fortnight If the prestige of opening the reservation fades from these Democratic congressional officers it is i feared that the county will go Republican Indeed the indications are that the Democrats Dem-ocrats will lose the county for the first time This man evidently needs an iron band around hIs head lest his sense of importance import-ance swell it to uncomfortable proportions propor-tions Really ais fellow commissioners or his friends should look after himHis head should he bathed Ia some soothing solution to cool his fevered Imagination I lie is evidently under the impression that because he addressed a handful of Re pobUcans at the close of the late county convention on the alleged shortcomings of the Democrats that hehas turned the political tide The impression that the gentleman made even upon his few Be publican hearers Is apparent when it is stated that an effort to learn just what was said a few days after developed the fact that no one seemed to remember anything about it It is reported that this sameiDemos thenes from Ohio isIll stump the county in thefl fimtrest of the party of which he is such an important part By all nieans turahlmioose it will probably help him and hurt nobody We Ould ndvse him however in the mosV kindly spirit to go home before election to avoid any sodden sod-den shock Strange Things happen some timen and everf with uch terrible odis as Mr Abbot to contend against It is just possiblo that Uintah county may go Democratic To tell the truth we rather surmise that it will Yes Come on Mr Abbot and by the way dont forget to bring a flag with you its such an ma spiratlon and a nina can shriek about tio flag when ho cannot think of anything else to say It seems from the reports that Mr Abbot does not exactly agree with Sea ator flawlins and Congrsm King concerning the amount of available idr1 I on tlro reservation and gives it nut as hii opinion that tlere will be very much 1 land than is generally supposed eft 1 ir settlement after the allotments are corn pleted Well we presume that settles Of course the opinions of Senarr Rawlins and Judge King who have hi in Utah horn and breed amount to itit very little as against the eminimit gent mien from Ohio who knows just is mu ii about irrigation as he does biut indiana in-diana Speaking of the allotments tad the ultimate opening of the resrvition it ma be sLated right here that tiere are certain individuals who it is bieved son the seeds of discontent and dii rust itt the minds of the Indians artil w along with the commissions do tot caro whether the county is ever opened to settlers We allude to parties who are working to obtain teases on mining propo sitioas inside the reservation lines AI these things tend to confuse the Indians and makes it difficult mattr to deal wlth themHERBERT TYZACK |
