Show DISREPUTABLE WORIi Tho Salt Lake Tribune is in pain Ithas received a severe shock In carefully reading THE HERALD its daily custom for which it is to be commended it discovered dis-covered on Tuesday that a paragraph sent by the Associated Press to the Tiib did not appear in THE HERALD This caused an attack of the gripes and forthwith it gave vent to the ill humor which usually accompanies its frequent experiences of stomachache THE HERALD is accused of disreputable disreputa-ble work of tampering with the news dishonest practice partisan bigotry panderingto persons and a lot of similar things in the usual style I of the Liberal organ when in tribulation Now what is it all about The press reports I re-ports of Congressional news contained a I brief synopsis of some remarks by Senator Sena-tor Pugh which were still further condensed con-densed by the telegraph editor in order to make space for more valuable matter to wit a long special from Washington which appeared on the same page But j that the public may fully understand the matter we here insert the paragraph j which our choleramorbused contemporary j contempor-ary is so much pained about and which it has brought up the second time to the public gaze The message of the President calling the extra session was a declaration in favor of the gold standard If the Sherman Sher-man law were unconditionally repealed such action would cause discontent among the toiling millions to such an extent that it would shake the country He would never vote for unconditional repeal but would favor any substitute which carried out the platform of Democratic party Now what is there new or startling or absolutely necessary to nrint in that paragraph par-agraph It has been said over and over again by different speakers And is it absolutely essential in order to be reputable rep-utable honest unpartisan etc to print every line of telegraph matter that comes from the Associated Press Does the Tribune always do that What is a telegraph editor for if not to use his brains as well as his scissors and paste potOn On comparing what it is alleged was left out of the dispatch with what was put in it will be seen that the paragraph omitted was partly a rehash of what appeared and on inquiry we learn from the telegraph editor that he regarded it as a repetition which often occurs and which a careful preparer of dispatches will not allow to double up in print The truth is our flatulent morning contemporary con-temporary has found it so difficult to find fault with THE HERALD and has become so sour over its own frequent discom fitures that in its agony of bowels suffering suffer-ing from a gnawing within probably through swallowing its store teeth in eating its own wordsit snapped at this chance of getting off something nasty against the paper that has fed it with its ownpabulum The Tribune has made such a mess of its own editorial efforts lately that it need not attempt to edit THE HERALD The press dispatches require a good deal of curtailment cur-tailment and instead of being disreputable disrepu-table to cut them down it becomes sometimes an absolute necessity to make a newspaper lively and interesting And whatever may be thought of the manner in which this is done THE HERALD has never yet been guilty of manufacturing dispatches or clipping old stuff that has appeared in print in country papers and heading them as specials That and such attempts to besmear THE HERALD as the Tribune made on Wednesday is really and emphatically disreputablework |
