Show r III IS DESPERATE WORK The Bush for the Strip Is Growing Grow-ing Hour by Hour NO BEDS NO BLANKETS The Salt Lake Contingent Is Located X at Orlando Great Suffering Among the Strippers on Account of Dust and a lnck of WaterSeveral Deaths from Exposure WICHITA Kan Sept i3Special The border towns along the Cherokee strip in Kansas Oklahoma and tne Panhandle Pan-handle of Texas are already so overcrowded over-crowded with boomers that it is almost impossible to secure necessary food while there is not a bed or a blanket to hire and the outfitting houses are being drained of supplies There is hardly a state or territory in the union but is adding ad-ding its quota The Santa Fe distributed along Us line on the Kansas and Panhandle borders since yesterday morning over 5000 people peo-ple fortyone coaches being employed this morning Three sections were southbound south-bound while about 2000 souls are now arriving here on their way to be distributed dis-tributed at their destination Tonight considering the facts that the Rock Island is bringing in about the same number and the Missouri Pacific railway is being taxed to its utmost in its passenger department de-partment an idea might be formed of the hegira to the promised land The majority of the refugees are crowding toward the eastern end of the strip though many are scattered along in the railroad towns in the western borders the Panhandle tswns being especially crowded A Denver colony of over 100 headed by Colonel John A Moore is here and will take the Santa Fe tonigh for Higgins Hig-gins Tex to colonize Woodward the county seat of uN county The nearest point by rail to the proposed county seat is fortyfive miles and but eighteen miles across Two men will be on racehorses race-horses who will ride straight across and locate the townsite in the name of the colony which will follow at the rate of fifteen miles an hour There seems to be no definite action decided upon by the Salt Lake boys at least they do not seem to be altogether as to the course to pursue pur-sue In any event however the average Salt Laker will come out as near the front as any class of people and there is no doubt the Mormon Mor-mon crowd as they have been dubbed will gather some goodsized plums There is one thing sure the Salt Lake boys have made a favorable impression impres-sion but the personnel of the party would assure that in any country and among any people From such expression as could be secured the boys are not so enthusiastic en-thusiastic as upon starting but will carryout carry-out their object oi aiding in opening the strip and lining their pockets with what they may secure for their pains i they do not locate There is much suffering among boomers owing to the intense heat and dust and lack of water There has been no rain for the past two months Corn is burning up in Reno Harvey Sedgwick and Sumner counties of Kansas and the grass on the prairies is like tinder Many people are succumbing suc-cumbing to the intense heat of the days and the stuffing dust Several having died already of exposure There is terrible terri-ble suffering among those in line awaiting await-ing a chance to secure certificates of entry As for myself I would not give the Sal Lake Provo or Cache valley for a dozen Cherokee strips and my advice to the Utah people ia to stay at home as it is a desperate undertaking I start for Arkansas City tonight and will tomorrow proceed to Orlando where the Salt Lake boys are rendezvoused |
