Show EGAD TO THE COAST Hr Whittemore Makes a Report to the Chamber of Commerce I I Importance of aLma Connecting Salt iake With Los Angetes Resources of I Southern California i C O Whittimore who spent several weeks in Los Angeles in the interest of a railroad to connect that city with Salt Lake has submitted a report of his labors to the chamber of commerce This in connection with the information informa-tion that the Salt Lake ek Los Angeles railway company is now endeavoring to secure the necessary money to extend their road to Deep Creek and eventually to California and that tue chamber of commerce has appointed a committee to submit a plan for securing local aid to a road that will build west gives to Mr Whitimores communication timely interest in-terest His letter was as follows MR WHITTDIORES REPORT To the honorable President and Board of Directors Di-rectors of the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce Com-merce I GENTLEMEN While on my way to Lon Angeles An-geles in December 183 i received at San Francisco a letter from President Donnellan and Secretary Sears of the Bait Lake chamber of commerce requesting as a member the chamber of commerce commUtoe on projeotcu railways to devote what time I could pare in the Interest of tho proposition tout which sc muon has been said and so little acoomullsliecl namely the building of a railway linofrum this city to Los Angeles and tho PaUdc coast In response to this request I devoted considerable consid-erable time during my three months stay in southern California to Increasing the interobi that 1 found already existing among all classes of people it this part of the country in regard to this matter and Investigating as to the aid that would be extended from that quarter to S such an enterpriseS enterprise-S While I found a great interest manifested by all classes of people in the project ana a greatS great-S desire existing that the road should be built S hero without delay still there seemed to beery be-ery little disposition to aid except with talk I the promotion ot this enterprise which when S accomplished would aid Salt Lake and Los Angeles moro than any fifty things that have ever happened to them In this particular 1 was very much struck with the similarity be I twccn the peopie here and there In my investigation I inves-tigation of this project I found in what Is J I designated as soutnorn California proper l which I mbracos the five southern counties of I that state and which would be tri utary I to a road built from this city to Los Angeles I a population of about o50UOO occupying a country and owning and cultivating A Boll that I would furniih its owner with products from which could be realized more money to the acre than any land on the face of tho globe I found a country whose fruit and vegetable products amounted to nearly 10001 W < in 1892 I found a country that is as yet onl partially settled which will in time and which is capable capa-ble of supporting a population of J1 OOuOO and whose products will eventually amount to at I least 000000 In addition to this condition S of prosperity 1 found a peop who were without with-out coal iron copper lead silver or any precious I preci-ous metals with which uur country abounds asa as-a consequence I found a people who manufactured manufac-tured comparatively dale bu who depended upon countries east and north of thorn for almost i al-most overything Jonsumed and used aside from fruits and vegotaoloa a people who sent away annually 10000000 worth of fruits vegetables I t1nd wines in return for them receiving groceries I grocer-ies clothing and manufactured products necessary I neces-sary for their daily use As an actual result of this condition of affairs I found that prices I upon all manufactured articles and commodities commodi-ties were much higher than here and that from S10 to 15 was paid for coal consumed and avery a-very inferior article it was One ton 01 Hook Springs or Pleasant Valley coal being equal to about one and a hail tons of the coal that they pay 210 to 8i5 for As a result of this investigation I naturally became very much impressed with the idea that bouthern California was just the country that Salt Lake needs to catch by building a railway line to it From many interviews inter-views with bankers merchants business men farmers and laboring men I became further impressed with the fact that Salt Lake olty should take a vigorous hold of this railway project and get aline extended Into Nevada The people of southern California would come to ecyo assistance and build the west half of the road I found in Los Angeles a railway corporation cor-poration in existence known as the Los Angeles Ange-les Termini Railway company which was organized organ-ized about five years ago for the parposo of building a line through Los Angeles and the coast to the harbor of San Pedro and to the cities in the vicinity of Los Angeles in order to be in a position to cooperate with another railway rail-way company who should desire to build into that country from the east This corporation has already expended about 512000u 0 in scouring scour-ing rights of way through the city and surrounding sur-rounding country and to the harbor and obtaining obtain-ing suitable harbor facilities so that this company Is in an excellent position to join with a bimllar corporation at th is end and carry this great enterprise to completion We are fully acquainted with the great advantages ad-vantages which will accrue In the building of this road it is useless to siy more on this subject sub-ject The great question that now presents Itself is how can this project be inaugurated so as to insure success The man or the company com-pany of men who will solve this problem are just now In great demand I understand under-stand that the question is to come up for consideration by you today For this reason I deemed it advisable to make this report to you trusting that it may Rid you In your uelibera tions upon this absorbing subject In my judgment however the present seems a very inopportune time in which to attempt the commencement com-mencement of this project The citizens ot Salt Lake have just promised a magnificent bonG to a copper refining company com-pany who are to locate here which has not been paid and from all present indications will not be raised and paid for several months To undertake to raise the amount to properly start or to induce others to start a railway to Deep Creek and to tne coast until the smelter bonus has been disposed of would be useless and would certainly result in a failure For this reason It would be much better to allow this Question to remain until fall and then with renewed energy and redoubled efforts and with no obstacles in the way again take up the cry of On to Deep Creek and the coast and let nothing interfere until the object is attained Now let us turn our attention in another direction di-rection from which source it the opportunity presented is acted upon Salt Lake oan receive untold benefitnamely that of properly placing plac-ing our city with Its wonderful climate and resources re-sources before the millions of people who will visit the Worlds fair As I understand it nc thing has as yet been done towards advertising advertis-ing this city aside from the exhibits that are to be placed in the Utah builuing A Salt Lake or Utah souvenir should be gotten got-ten up handsome enough and valuable enough to be kept by those fortunate enough to receive one these should be distributed judiciousy while the fair is in progress and from this time until it closes a competent committee should be established in tho Utah headquarters where information of all kinds should ue imparted and people induced to visit thii section This is a matter of vita importance and should be taken up by the chamber of commerce com-merce and business mens assoc ation with ut a moments further delay No such opportunity for advertising the resources of this city and country will be presented again in this a eVery e-Very reapeottuily submitted C O WUITTLUORE Railroad Notes Passenger
