| Show The latest Berlin Scandal Special to THE HERALDExaminer Cable I BERLIN Oct 5The latest scandal in Berlin where some scandal is always in the air is that the Emperor is up to his eyes in debt and that the need of money I has compelled him to hypothecate the family I fam-ily jewels There is no truth in this gossip but i is an interesting commentary on the bitter feeling in certain circles of the nobility no-bility tnat such a rumor could gain credence I cre-dence The Emperor has more read Vat V-at his disposal than he knows what to do with He spends no more than is abso luteiy necessary ana takes gooa care that what he spends goes to foster domestic in dustries He hai never disbursed a penny in riotous gambling or foreign nick nacks His oue object seems to be to live free from vice and in accordance with the precepts or his father I The remote origin of the scandal about money was an incident which created a Hurry on the royal residence here last week Tho Empress telegraphed from Cassel for some jewels she wished to lend to her sisterinlaw the Princess Victoria These jewels were kept in an oldfashionec strong box to which the Empress and her chamberlain Count Mirrbach alone have the key The count could not find his key and that ot the Empress had also been mis laid A locksmith was sent for and ordered to bring his lock picking instruments The locksmith started out but on endeavoring to pase the guards in his rough fustian suit his tools sticking out of his pockets he was arrested as a burglar In the meantime mean-time Count Mirrback was working himself into a frenzy At lenth he rushed out to find the locksmith and passing the sentinel senti-nel learned of tho arrest The prisoner was promptly released picked the lock and released the jewels |
