Show TilE NOVE1IBEK STATE ELECTIONS Five states of the union hold elections of more or less national importance on the 3rd of November next They are Now York Pennsylvania Massachusetts Ohio and Iowa Of these Ohio may perhaps be I aid to be less involved in merely state I politica than any of the others but public interest naturally attaches to all as likely to show a possible or probable alignment j for the great presidential contest of 1S92 Though the prosperous condition of tho I agricultural districts of the country has nothing to do with the case tI as to the arguments for and against the Republican L position on the subject of the tariff it is i unquestionably true that it has to a considerable con-siderable extent taken the sharp edge off the active Interest of the farmers in political polit-ical affairs It has produced an apathy in i those quarters ft r the time being which is advantageous to the Republican and correspondingly corre-spondingly hurtful to the Democratic side > of the contest It is useless to argue that this ought not to be so in the face of tho discouraging fact that it is so Ona of tho reasons why the Ohio cam Jj paign affords so much of public interest is I tho fact that the Republicans there have boldly challenged the result of last years elections by the nomination for governor of Major McKiNLEr the putative father of the prohibitive tariff act under which the country is now governed His opponent is Governor CAMPJJELL present incumbent who last tail defeated Governor FOKAKER by a majority of 1087 but who was the only mau elected on the Democratic ticket MCKINLEY who is a solid man and personally per-sonally wellliked has beau making a thorough thor-ough and industrious canvass of the state assisted by many effective speakers of national repute as well as by all the big home guns including Senator SHERMAN The Republicans are very confident At the start they were apprehensive of the Peoples party but somehow they seem to have overcome this feeling and claim that its vote will be about equally divided whereas the Democrats have expected it would draw largely from their opponents There is still we may say no little aoubt as to tho effect this organization will have on the general result There is a strong disposition dis-position among the Alliance members to support CAMPBELL but the leaders insist they shall do their work within their own lines Another drawback to the success of the Democracy is the condition of the organization organi-zation in Cincinnati and Hamilton county This county gave CAMPBELL two years ago a majority of 7000 which figures represent onehalf only of FORAKERS losses The Republicans now claim it by 5000 to ll > 000 in consequence of a local defection caused by some of CAIPl ELLS appointments appoint-ments There is also some dissatisfaction in other parts of the state growing out of similar pretexts Ordinarily Ohio is a Republican state It gave HARRISON 19000 majority with Judge TUURMAN Vrunuing on tho other ticket The federal patronage bestowed there is enormous It is tho home of a great army of pensioners and many of the people sprang from a long line of abolitionists abolition-ists and promoters of the Republican party And whilst money has flowed from I the east like water into the hands of tho Republican committees it is said that this year there have been no contributions for I the Democracy New York Boston and L I Philadelphia refused it is stated because t of the Ohio resolution in favor of free silver sil-ver coinage CLEVELAND HIIL PATTISON I RUSSELL GORMAN and other prominent j lights have stayed at home whilst almost the only leading orators from the outside have been MILLS CRISP and SPRINGER aspirants for tho Speakerahip The governors gov-ernors patronage is limited to a very fow unimportant offices The armies of state officers in tho big cities get their places I irom local boards And yet with all these disadvantages CAMPBELL may win He was ill for nearly two months a ter his renomination Then came unkind stories about his alleged financial embarrassment The Cincinnati Enquirer Dem whilst according a perfunctory j per-functory support has not given signs of cordial cooperation in the canvass All these with other drawbacks occasioned much depression But it is wonderful with what magic effect his presence on the rostrum ros-trum electrified the party CAMPBELL is quick witty brilliant aud magnetic His speeches have bristled with sharp points carrying his great audiences before him At Ada he thrashed the very ground with McKiNLEY so to speak It seems like the reaction has set in as was the case two I years ago and that nothing can stop it The disgruntlement in Hamilton county is disappearing dis-appearing With these cheering indications indica-tions continuing who knows but what CAMPBELL will come under the wire liKe avery a-very Sunol of political racers with his old time 11000 majority or nearly I The Senatorial contest in Ohio is likely also to be exceedingly Interesting for what will it profit the Republicans to gain Mc KINLKT and to lose SHERMAN There is a big though quiet light on between the sage of Mansfield and exGovernor FORAKER for the legislature and it is hard to tell at this I distance which has the better of it as the case stands at present Of course the hope of Democrats is that their side will either have a clear majority or enough with Alliance Alli-ance help to elect a Senator opposed to Republican Re-publican policies w jt The outlook in New York is for a sweeping sweep-ing Democratic victory The battle cry of the Republicans with FASSETT as their leader is opposition to Tammany hall but 01 course the prime object is to show that the state can be carried for the Republican nominee for the Presidency next year FASSETT is the mere mouthpiece of the Republican Re-publican ring led by Boss PLATT who manipulates tho federal patronage patron-age in the Empire state Substituted Substi-tuted on the slate at the last moment for ANDREW C WHITE he was nominated under the fatal misapprehension that the Democracy were so torn up by personal bickerings the path to a Republican Republi-can victory would be an easy one It was calculated that differences between the friends of HILL and CLEVELAND would make a breach which could not be healed And then the feeble menaces of Lieutenant Governor JONES were magnified into signs of tremendous portent Further it was supposed that Mayor CHAPIN of Brooklyn backed by MCLAUGHLIN would surely kick the ticket over But all these predictions pre-dictions and expectations have come to naught CLEVELAND HILL and CIIAPIN have proclaimed their adhesion to the Democratic Dem-ocratic ticket in tones admitting of no doubtful meaning JONES has subsided into innocuouSidesuetude and all the bright dreams born of Democratic dissension dissen-sion have vanished into airInto thin air We shall carry New York and that magnificent mag-nificent state will be placed this year where her pig electoral vote can be surely counted on in 92 for tho nominee the Democracy O Democratic victories when they have occurred in Pennsylvania since 1S5G have always been phenomenal HARRISON beat CLEVELAND 7945S in 1SSS In 1S9 for treasurer the Republican plurality was 32o6o > But in 1S90 PATTISON Dam defeated de-feated DELAMATER Rep 16554 PATTISON is again the Democratic candidate QCAY the Pennsylvania boss is still at the helm as general director of the Republican machine ma-chine though he has resigned all titulary rights to that distinction The misbehavior of Republican state officials has absorbed the whole political debate so that tho contest con-test has resolved itself into a discussion of the eighth commandment instead of some resolutions of a party platform BARDSLET the Keystone bank matters the dishonest disposition of state and city funds and cognate cog-nate topics are all one sees in tho Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania papers as connected with the coming election The state senate is now in session called by Governor PATTISON to inquire into the particulars and to devise measures i of dealing with the offenders but there is J every indication that tho peoplo at the i polls will frame an indictmeut that will be i quite as pronounced aud effective as anything any-thing which may be expected from a Republican Re-publican legislative body i i Democrats in Massachusetts will veto j I for the reelection of that bright alert and patriotic young statesman Governor RUSSELL II RUS-SELL whose administration of the affairs of the commonwealth has been successful I and acceptable It has been only within a few years that anything pointing towards > < 111 I Democratic triumphs could bo looked for in Massachusetts and the young Democracy Democ-racy i have much to loam before they will be 1 in line with the party at large but the gospel of tho people is spreading there and on the 4th of November THE HERALD hopes to record another splendid victory Yet It must be admitted the Republicans are making an unusually desperate effort to score a success Mr ALLEN their nominee is i very popular among the manufacturers manufact-urers and is said to be a man of taking address His speeches of course are full of statistics showing the benefits of protection to the people of the commonwealth and with their accumulated wealth and prospering business it cannot bo denied he makea a powerful exhibit HENRV CABOT LODGE the author of the bill to carry the southern con ressional elections by Republican bayonets bay-onets bus been very prominent on the I stump and within the past fow days TOM REED tho czar of the last House of Representatives Repre-sentatives has made his appearance before Republican audiences P Iowa is the third state wherein this year a Democrat is running for reelection Governor Butts has made an acceptable executive and was renominated by his party with great unanimity His opponent is i a man named WHEELER who appears to have risen from obscurity as tho special apostle of coercive temperance Tho prohibition pro-hibition issue cuts a very considerable figure in the contest although it i by no means represents the full scope of the questions before the people Enforced teetotalism in Iowa accompanied by forfeiture for-feiture of property like breweries etc has been a howling failure and the voters evidently think a good high license law that will place around the sale of liquor wine and lager beer some needed regulations regula-tions and at the same time assist in relieving reliev-ing the burdens of taxation will do better than the ineffectual and ridiculous system prevailing which encourages as much as it restrains vice and establishes an espionage that does not belong to free republican countries A new legislature is to be elected this year and the Democracy have buoyant hopes of carrying it Two years ego there was bare Republican majority of six and many of the senators elected in the grand boom of 1890 hold over From the best advices ad-vices THE HERALD has been able to obtain we shall elect the Democratic state ticket and a majority in the legislature |
