| Show Harrison Acknowledges I Tin Plate Present PITTSHURG Oct 21Lust week W C Cronemeyors United States Iron and Steel Tin Plate works at Dornmler Pa sent President Harrison a box of tin manufactured manufac-tured at the Demmler works This morning morn-ing Cronemeyer received the following letter from President Harrison dated Washinctoa Oct 29 My Dear SirI have your letter of Octooer 15 and also the box of bright tinplate tn plate which you send as a specimen of the product being turned out by the United States Iron and Tin Plate company 1 have no skill in determining the character of this work but to the eye it seems to bo eminently satisfastory and I thank you for this evidence that a new industry has been established in the United States 1 cannot r quite understand how any American can doubt we have the mechanical skill and ski J S business saeacity to establish successfully stccessfuly here the manufacture of tin plate No k other country certainly surpasses in Inventive genius its citizens or in business sagacity its capitalists I is surprising to me any patriotic American should ap proach this question with a desire to see this great and interesting experiment fail or with unwillingness to accept evidences of itfe success I will be a great step in the direction of commercial independence when we produce our own tin plate It seems to me nothing unless it be lack of S faith in tbo maintenance of the present f t law can thwart this desirable achievement achieve-ment I can understand how our success chould doubted and our failure accepted with satisfaction In Wales but 1 cannot I understand how any American can take I that view of the question or why he should always approach every evidence of the sue cesstul establishment of this industry in I E this country with a disposition to discredit and regret it I the great experiment is I If to fail our own people should not add to i the mortification of the failure the crime I t of rejoicing in it |
