| Show A DEATH LEAP A Woman Throws Herself from I I Herself the Washington Monument In Baltimore This 1 thsSecond SuicIde from That l ace She Was a Bright Light In Hebrew Society I Special to Tat HERALD Examiner Dispatch BALTIMORE Oct 21For tho second time since the erection of the Washington monument there has n death leap been taken from the top of that historic column The first was sixteen years ago when a forlorn suitor smarting with the pangs of unrequitted love made a dramatic exit from this world The second instance occurred yesterday when a refined young woman sought this means of death This suicide was Miss Alice Hecht who until a few years ago was one of the brightest and most active young womon in Hebrew society so-ciety She was scarcely four feet tall and though aO years old weighed not rnoro than Jore eighty pounds She had been of a lively disposition but as her old friends married and withdrew from festivities she ceased to find pleasure in social gayety During the past year her friends noticed a change in her appearance denoting despondency but no suspicion was ever entertained that she had any notion of taking her own life The home comforts were all she could wish Her father Moses Hecht iq one of thu most highly esteemed Israelites in this city cityShortly after noon yesterday a visitor who had started to go to tbo monument top rushed into the keepers office with the in formation that 1 young woman was lying dead on the first landing which forms the roof of the custodians office iSho was not so disfigured as might be expected after her fall of 100 feat She was lying I I against the column her spine fractured I ono side of the face was somewhat bruised but her hands and foot were uninjured and her garments only slightly disarranged John Burn tho keepers son says ho had seen her walking about the monument for some time but she first went to the top last Saturday Either her courgo failed then as she found herself at that dizzy height or so many people were about she I feared she might be prevented She remained re-mained only a short time Yesterday she I went again Two visitors wero at tie sle when she stepped out on the portico extending ex-tending around the column just below the I statue They noticed that she appeared I ill and questioned her but she answered I vaguely and they came down There was I no one to identify the body and it was taken to the morgue where it remained I until last evening |
