| Show SUNOL AND MAUD S Robert Bonner Talks of Their Respective Merits He Does Not Like to Say the California 3are is Superior to the Keutuckian Sunol Will soo gO Lint Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK Oct 21Mr Robert Bonner sat up later than usual last night in the tope of hearing something about tho splendid performance of his treasured fveI yearold Sunol which astonished the trotting trot-ting world two years ago by creating anew r a-new record 210X for threeyearolds r Your correspondent imparted to Mr Bon ner the first news be received of tho peerless I mares unparalleled performance yesterday j yester-day Mr Bonners eye sparkled and his face radiated with a smile of gratified delight de-light There was lust a trace of nervousness nervous-ness in bis manner duo doubtless to tho nervous strain waiting for the result of Sunols race against time After recover ing from the surprise the announcement of Sunols time gave him Mr Bonner said I regard Sunol as the most wonderful animal aver foaled I hesitate to compare her with Maud S as she made her record I over the regulation track and as all horsemen horse-men know the kiteshaped track over which Sunol trotted is 1 trite faster than I I the regulation Still it is n clorious re1 I cord The best previous time over the samo kind of a track is 200j made by Allerton To show you how much superior I regard Sunol to Maud Swill I I S-will say that I paid William 1C Vanderbilt 40000 for Maud S and Senator Stanford 41000 for Sunol I do not look upon this now and fine record of Sunois as quite as good as that of Maud S over the regulation track Sunol will trot over this track later I think she probably will not exceed Maud Ss marvelous marvel-ous speed These two horses I regard as nearly evenly matched Senator Stanford from whom I purchased Sunol on Novem ber 2 1880 has written to mo that the mare SuKol will trot in 205 Ho knows more about her capabilities than I do and he may bo right 1 believe her performance of 2104 as a threeyearold is greater than this her record as D fiveyearold and I think every horseman will agree with men I me-n this opinion The three greatest trotters trot-ters in the world are in my opinion Maud S Sunol and Nancy Hanks I do not expect ex-pect to live to see any horse trot a mile over the regulation track in 200 Nor do I expect ever to see another threeyear old equal Sunola time of 2 1 Some enthusiasts hope the record may be eventually brought down to 200 or very close to that figure I think 205 or 200 on the regulation track probably will be the limit We have not bad enough experience with the kiteshape track to tell what may be accomplished ont i on-t Marvin has written to me thatthe kite shaped track being new is somewhat slow I Ho says that after the fall rains in a week or so the track will bo packed and solid and that Suuol will reduce perhaps by a frac I ton of a second her present magnificent time Maud S is now breeding but I bo lievo that when she ia in perfect condition and good training she can trot in about 207 I believe also that Sunol can equal Maud S on time regulation track Nancy Hanks has trotted over a private truck which is fast the soil being elastic in 209 I would not have bought Sunol if I had not thought her to be the finest piece of horse flesh in the world I will bring her bore I about November 1 possibly a week or so II I later and will jog her on the roads for a whilo In the spring I will have her put in training to beat the record over the regu lation track |
