Show 1 Silver Petition Secretary Benton of the chamber of commerce yesterday had the following i petition printed and copies will be circa I ated throughout the territory i A PETITION To the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States in Congress assembled We tho undersigned citizens of Utah I territory respectfully represent that we have suffered and are now suffering great hardship and privation u the result of the failure of the government of the United States to provide a staple and sufficient currency for the transaction of our ordinary and necessary business at airs Our industries languish our I workmen are unemployed We believe that the evils from which we suffer are the direct result of the financial policy of the present and past administrations of the government which has reused re-used to recognize silver as a money metal I of equal importance and power with gold and by closing the mints of the United States to its free coinage has made it impossible im-possible for us even by industry and economy to acquire the money necessary to the development of our industries ando and-o our happiness and prosperity We therefore petition your honorable body to immediately enact such legislation as will restore the financial policy of the United States government to the position it occupied oc-cupied prior to 1873 and to open the mints of the United States to the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 on the same terms and conditions condi-tions as apply to the coinage of gold |
