Show HILL ON TRIAL Examination of Ogdens Defaulting Bank Cashier The Case Was Not Concluded but Goes Over Until TodayHe I Still in Charge of Officers OGDeN U T July 11Special1 The preliminary examination of Oscar E Hill defaulting cashier of the Commercial Commer-cial bank commenced this afternoon before be-fore Commissioner Gideon The offices of the commissioner were not large enough to hold the great crowd which gathered to hear evidenc e in the case and an adjournment was taken to the county court rooms Hill was represented by Rainsford Smith while the United States was represented by District Attorney At-torney Judd and assistant McGinnis The hearing was not concluded and an adjournment was taken at 6 oclock until tomorrow morninp p un A large number witnesses were examined ex-amined among them being President Armstrong of the Commercial bank Director Di-rector Whalen Attorney Heywood Examiner Ex-aminer Adams Cashier Rolapp of the Utah Loan and Trust company t and Teller Taylor and Bookkeeper Currier of the Commercial The testimony adduced sustains the reports published in TH HERALD and showed how Hill had used the money belonging to the institution for private purposes in several cases making loans to men interested with him in some manner in real estate deals or other business transactions The shortage short-age will not fall short of 70000 with more counties to hear from Armstrong told how Hill had confessed to him on Saturday afternoon that the bank was insolvent due to to his having appropriated funds and how when questioned ques-tioned regarding the manner in which he had used the money the cashier had even then covered up the full amount of his defalcation of his examination During the course examinaton Mrs Hill occupied a seat behind her husband hus-band The terrible strain is beginning to tell upon her although Hill maintains his usual frigid exterior Tonight he is again in the custody of Deputy Exum but is guarded at his own residence or what was formerly his own residence it I having been turned over to the DanK in part payment for the amount of money 1 taken by him Robert Adams the young man who is charged with the rape of Mrs Elizabeth Bos the aged dutch woman was tonight held to the grand jury in bonds of 3500 which he failed to give The crime with which Adams is charged is horrible in its details On Wednesday last some man entered the home of Mrs Bos on Twentysixth street and outraged the old woman three times after which he robbed her of all the money in her possession poss-ession and escaped without being seen by the neighbors Late the same night Adams was arrested ar-rested aud taken to the womans home and identified by her as the assailant While still maintaining his innocence the prosecution has woven such a web of evidence around him that it will be impossible im-possible for the fellow to escape |
