Show Canals and Reservoirs The subject of irrigation is attracting attention in those parts of the country where it is not needed as well as the districts dis-tricts that without it would be a desert New York has a new paper called the Irrigation Market It is riot anything near so good a paper as the Irrigation Age published in this city and the most interesting in-teresting article it contains is from the pen of JOEL SHOHAKEII of Utah There are vast stretches of land in this territory that now lie uncultivated and are useless for range growing only sage and other scrubby brush which if irrigated irri-gated could be made highly productive Some of them are high and dry above and beyond any present available water supply sup-ply Others could be irrigated if sufficient means and energy were applied in bringing bring-ing out and storing tho streams that come from the mountains In a short time it is likely that Sanpete an already prolific county will be able to irrigate thousands of acres of good land now barren and unfruitful A company com-pany has been formed to effect this purpose pur-pose It is called the Fairview Reservoir and Irrigation company One of its first efforts will be to build a big dam in a box canyon leading from Gooseberry valley and store water enough to make a large supply during the summer A tunnel will have to be constructed through a mountain in order to bring the water within using distance and a canal of considerable con-siderable length built so as to utilize it in the valley These enterprises are needed in Utah and can be put in operation in many places without very much cash outlay By placing the shares at a very small amount workingmen can become stockholders I stock-holders ana by cooperation of labor I reservoirs may be built which will be safe storages and a supply of water can be secured in the seasons when it is not needed for farms already having a right to its use and thus large areas may be made valuable that now are worthless It may be said this period of financial stringency is a poor time to talk of going into any kind of an extensive venture That is all nonsense These are the very times ior folk to keep moving and to en gage in something that will stir up both people and business Utah needs more I arable land She will have to feed the stock that now roams upon tracts fast spoiling for ranges While business men are sucking their thumbs or jingling a bunch of keys in a coinless pocket let the live men in the country districts pushoutand make times better by devising means to bring idle land into profitable use and they will gain large returns for their enterprise and toll and will not have to wait long for profits either Irrigating canals and storage reservoirs are to be sources of big revenues in this western country |
