an-nual fession tomorrow morning at 10 oclock and hold a two days session The Salt Lake delegation will arrive at 915 oclock and proceed at once to the convention tention hail the board of trade headquarters I head-quarters in the city hall which have been specially fitted up for tho occasion Two sessions will be held the first day at the conclusion of which the association will go out to the springs where a reception and banquet will be given The address of welcome will be made by Dr F B Hurlbut of Ogden A large number of able papers will be read before the association asso-ciation THE GEORGE LEWIS ESTATE I Judge Bishop today appointed Professor Profes-sor T B Lewis administrator of the estate es-tate of Thomas A George Lewis the 4 gambler killed by Eugene Borel This 1 action was in response to a petition filed i by Mrs Sarah Lindsey of Phoenix A T mother of the deceased and in direct opposition op-position to the petitions filed by the contestant con-testant the woman who claims to be the widow of George An appeal will betaken be-taken to the district court by the latter Meanwhile the newly appointed administrator adminis-trator will assume charge of the estate MAGISTRATES ON A STRIKE Ogdens United States commissioners and justices of the peace are on a strike and an agreement signed by every one of 4 the offices providing that hereafter no cases will be docketed or processes issued unless a 3 docket fee is deposited will go into effect tomorrow morning THE CRIMINAL CALENDAR Judge Miner this morning began the trial of the criminal calendar Inasmuch as the city council has passed n Hnn iI iln n n 1n co u vuu uU > U5 y the objections of the merchants of Ogden the case brought by the city against A AY Putnam for the purpose of testing the ordinance was dismissed The case of the People vs 0 L Blazer charged with forgery was called for trial but the defendant failed to answer and his bonds were declared forfeited The bonds were in the sum of 3000 the sureties t sure-ties being Anna Van Zuylen of Ogden and William E Davis of Westwater Utah The case of the People TS C L Blazer R E Moulton J H Shillings George T Harris and George Hackett was continued con-tinued for the term on account of the absence ab-sence of a number of the defendants The charge in this case was conspiracy and grew out of the Farmers and Mechanics Me-chanics bank swindle In this connection connec-tion it is but jut to say that Moulton has been in the city for several months past ready for trial Charles G Thompson the peddler p who last month attempted to rape a little girl was arraigned and pleaded guilty of assault He was sentenced to two months in the county jail E D Miller a beardless youth who Was charged with burglarizing the house of Dr Knox for whom he was working was arraigned but as the main witness for the prosecution failed to materalize he was discharged His mother was present in the court room and thanked the judge and Mr Allison with tears In her eyes John Conners almost a boy being but 20 years of age was found guilty by a jury and waiving time for sentence was sentenced to one year in the penitentiary On April 1 he broke into a boxcar at Col linston on the Union Pacific and stole several article of wearing apparel John Hopkins of Echo changed his plea of not guilty of the crime of unlawful unlaw-ful cohabitation to one of guilty and was ordered to appear on September 18th for sentence He is out on the usual bonds A jury was empaneled for the purpose of trying the case of adultery against 1 William Butler an old resident of Marri j otts and the court adjourned F TEl REED HOTEL CLOSED The Reed hotel closed its doors this morning and Proprietor Locke made an assignment for the benefit of creditors to H H Hake the well known cattleman i Tonight the blinds are drawn and the hotel is deserted except by a watchman This is one of the heaviest blows Ogden has received although THE HERALD man is assured that the hotel will not remain closed long as the gentleman who holds a mortgage of over 20000 on the furniture furni-ture and fixtures and is owner of the lease which has three years yet to run cannot afford to let the property lay idle as he will be forced to pay 1000 a month under the lease whether the hotel is closed or not The gentleman is Banker i q Risling of Joplin Mo In addition v to mortgages on the furniture and fixtures r fix-tures the liabilities will go over 1500 and tim assets cover about a third of that amount The creditors are local merchants merch-ants and the help ot the house When asked for a reason for the assignment assign-ment Mr Locke said he could not holdup hold-up under the high rental and other heavy expenses The hotel has not made expenses ex-penses since last summer except during the week of the TransMississippi con r gress Several 01 tne gentlemen most interested say however that the cause of the assignment was not due entirely to bad business but to an excess of help and unnecessary expenses An answer regarding re-garding the matter is expected from Mr I Risling tomorrow COU PEOOEEDINGS The city council tonight held an interesting inter-esting session remarkable alike for the amount of business transacted and the freedom from strife An ordinance was introduced and referred extending the time of the HendersonBrinker street franchise to May31 1891 An ordinance extending the franchise of the Salt Lake and Ogden Electric Light and Gas company for twentyfive years was then taken up and passed Upon this measure depended a large number of extensive improvements After a somewhat heated debate it was decided not to allow Sergeant Sleeth who is in Chicago on duty pay for his services ser-vices Bids for the paving of Twentyfifth I street with asphaltum and stone blocks were opened aL referred to the paving L committee with Dower to act There were 1 five bidders and of the bids received that of L G Wilkerson was much the lowest The latter will probably get the 1 contract a The bids received for the construction of the Rio Grande Western shops to be erected in this city t were sent to Salt Lake tonight and the award of the contract I will be made from there if THE STOCKYARDS BONDS A number of Ogdens bankers were in F consultation this afternoon with a special committee from the board of trade regarding regard-ing the best method of raising the 20000 I 4 bonus to secure the stockyards The meeting was private but it was learned that a committee wad appointed to arrange j ar-range details the banks to do their share |
