Show TWO GOOD APPOINTMENTS The Selection of Smith and Brigham Meets General Approval Utah has received her fuil share of attention at-tention at the hands of the national administration ad-ministration during the last few days and all of the more important federal appointments ap-pointments that were expected to be made at this time have now been announced The public had been looking for Judge Blackburns head to fall fora month and i those who were best informed knew that Hon H W Smith was a leader in the race strong petitions for his appointment having been sent in by the members of the bar of this city Provo and Ogden The appointment of a successor to United States Marshal Benton came rather sooner than was generally anticipated as the term did not expire until July but there seems to be no disposition to complain com-plain on this score There were twenty five applicants for this office but the real contest had narrowed down to Hon AG Norrell and Nat M Brigham Colonel Lett has never been a candidate for the office although persistent efforts have been made to make it appear that he had entered the race I Ts true that he was urged by friends t file his application but he refused to do so or to consent I I that his name should be used in that connection con-nection Mr Norrell was apparently as happy asa as-a clam last evening and not at all discon certedby the selection of another man for marahalship He is just as good a Democrat today as yesterday and takes his defeat with good grace The selection of Judge Smith to be as sosiate justice and Mr Brigham for the marshalship are looked upon as admira ble appointments not only by Democrats Demo-crats but by those of opposite political faith and a few expressions of approval are given below Judge Anderson do not think a better selection for the judgeship could have possibly been made Judge Smith is a gentleman of education and refinement and a very able lawyer and I think he will make a good judge Judge Henderson The appointment of Judge Smith is a good one elegant elegant ele-gant Brigham is a good man and will make a good marshal Iwould have been glad myself i Mr Benton had been asked to resign and the appointment made to take effect at the end of the official year which would have been the last of June H 11 Bacon Brigbam suits rile well enough He is energetic straightforward straightfor-ward and capable and will make a good I marshal I Martin Lannan one of the Tuscarora candidates for the marshalship came up smiling The appointment suits me and I am still a Democrat I realize that there were twentyfive candidates and twentyfour of them were doomed to defeat de-feat but I am not the kind of a Democrat to sulk because I did not get it D C Dunbar who has been one of the most indefatigable workers in Mr Brig hams behalf was in high feathers I had no ax to grind in this appointment said he but Brigham is one of my closest clos-est friends and I was almost as anxious that he should get it as he was himself Judge PowersThe appointment of Brigham is a firstclass one He is a highminded man and one who will make a conscientious and efficient public officer I Mr Smith carries the bench his natural ability and that which he has acquired from the study of the law and becomes a judge and in no sense a partisan I shall gladly say that his appointment ap-pointment is an equally good one Judge Bennett am inclined to think that the nominations made today are verv crood ones Mr Smith is an excel lent lawyer and tx Brigham is a very bright and capable young man with a clean record J K Gillispie Nat Brighams appointment appoint-ment is a good one I dont know much about Kentucky Smith George E BlairNat Brigham is a first class man and will discharge his duties faithfully and well I believe that Kentucky Ken-tucky Smith will fill the high position to which he has been appointed to the satisfaction satis-faction of the people United States Marshal Benton returned yesterday from a trip t Beaver With regard to Nat Brighams appointment he said in his usual jocund way Thats good but it is a little tough on the boys here at home I am ready to step down and out any minute < Mr Brigham is now in Washington but it is expected that lie will start for home Immediately |
