heavens on the west the Oqulrrh range and running between be-tween the long fertile valley of the Salt Lakea picture In green that any artist would love to gaze upon the whole forming form-ing a landscape upon which the eye of the I artist would love to dwelL i Arriving at Tenth South street the conductor con-ductor calls out City Limits SugarHouse House ward commences at this line Such scenes of activity are noticed as cannot be witnessed in any other suburb of Salt Lake city The sound of the hammer and saw can be heard on all sides now building are dotted all over the green and so many in course of construction as to make one believe that this intermountain metropolis is destined to become the leading city betWeen tweea Chicago and San Francisco We have every evidence of the confidence that capitalists have for the future of this suburb by glancing at the costly and elegant ele-gant residences being erected in Perkins View City and Grand View additionswhere thousands of dollars have been expended in the erection of large brick houses with all modern improvements and beautifying the grounds The majority of the buildings build-ings Deing erected are of the substantial i order and are being built by people of meanscapitalists and business men who wish to get away from the noise and turmoil tur-moil of city life the petty worries incident to a mercantile career and spend a quiet night in peacefulness and rest Alighting from the car at Twefth South street we proceed east and get into the business and manufacturing center of Sugar House All is activity here and mingled with the sound of the hammer is I heard the hum of the saws of the planing mill owned by THE PACIFIC LUMBER AND BUILDING COM PANT a new enterprise started ro a short time ago by a party of enterprising young men organizing a stock company They are to congratulated on the success they have attained That they are successful is evidenced evi-denced by the amount of labor they employ and their being pushed to fill the orders they are beinir loaded with The company organized with a capital of 150000 They furnish all kinds of builders supplies and also do a great amount of contracting themselves Several handsome brick and frame buildings in this locality bear testimony to their taste in architecture ar-chitecture and skill in workmanship This company have branched out to Park City and owinsr to their extensive business were compelled to enlarge their works and grounds purchasing the corner on Eleventh East and Twelfth South formerly for-merly occupied as a grocery from W C A Smoot for building purposes The company com-pany ara also agents for the Union Pacific and other coal companies and are prepared to furnish all kinds of coal at city prices They are now prepared and have the facilities to compete with any other lumber lum-ber company in the territory The officers of the Pacific Lumber aud Building company com-pany are Martin Garn president J E Jensen vicepresident W L Hanaen secretary and treasurer Coming out of the lumber office your correspondent met that whole souled and enterprising gentleman and all around good fellow the Hon W C A Smoot jr A cordial invitation being extended and accepted we entered the pleasure grounds knows asS as-S 00T5 PARK Leaving the buzzof the saw and turmoil of machinery behind it was like entering into Eden The ground is covered with a beautiful and luxuriant mantle of green one glance at which testified to the care and attention given to it by the owner Shade trees are in abundance and in places the limbs interlock forming an archway and making a beautiful canopy to protect those at luncheon from the burning rays of Old Sol A large dancing pavilion 30x50 stands on the west end of the grounds while back of the pavilion are the quoit grounds where all lovers of that sport can enjoy themselves Walking eastward from the pavilion through nice sbady paths We reach a bridge which spans an artificial lake Tho scene from here is beyond de bcaiption Boating indulged in here If one docs not care for rowing the swings are at your service Benches and tables are distributed plentifully throughout the grounds for the comfort of those who bring their lunches or should you not bring lunch along a restaurant and lunch counter coun-ter is run in connection with the grounds As soon as the cars are running on Eleventh Elev-enth East street the grounds will be lighted every night with electricity dances given three times a week No disreputable dis-reputable characters drunkenness or row dyism will be permitted iu the park The grounds will bo kept in firstclass order the aim of Mr Smoot being to have a first class pleasure Iesort in Sugar House so that families can bring their children and spend a quiet pleasant day under the trees Altogether Smoots park will compare favorably fa-vorably with any in the territory Among the late improvements right here Is a large twostory brick building 24x40 recently erected by Mr Smoot the lower story being used for a grocery and general merchandise After going through the Utah Central railway shops which are located lo-cated here a trip to the penitentiary was thought of Going east on the south boulevard which by the way is a very popujar drive wo can see rising before us a large now grim looking structure struct-ure There is no need to ask what building build-ing that is those high walls those guards pacing forward and backward with rifles thrown across the rmit is Utahs penitentiary entiary VIEW CITT This beautiful addition one of the most charming and popular suburbs of the city lies on the grassy and shaded slope just east of Smoots gardens Only a few lots remain re-maIn on the market as tho greater part is sold and built upon View City has plenty of water and plenty of shade and the Inhabitants in-habitants will soon have all conveniences of the city The electric road runs close by and THE HCIEALD is already delivered thereby there-by carrier one thing that alone will tend to boom View City is the location of the Marlborough college a boarding school on the English plan to be established by Mr Josoph Whitely late of London His plans are already out he has an acre of land in View City on a shady slope overlooking the whole valley and he will build a 10000 edl ice He has issued a prospectus of his school and has letters from prominent church people John R Smith Scott Vuerbach building is the owner md agent of View City Entering the gate wo are ushered Into the presence of that courteous and obliging gentleman Mr Oscar Vaudercook the warden Stating our object permission is graciously accorded to enter and we start on our tour of inspection Pausing to take an exterior view we seo an imposing brick edifieD standing in front of the old adobe building In this building is tho office of the warden reception rooms library and culinary and sleeping apartments of the guards In place of toe old adobe walls now stands an almost impregnable wall of stone twenty feet high and four wide at the base tapering toward the top to eighteen eigh-teen inches On the outside of the wall is fastened a walk two and onehalf feet wide from which the sentinels while on duty can overlook the yard below and keep watch of the prisoners working cleaning away I the debris or taking their exercise Guardhouses Guard-houses are on each corner of the walls in which lookouts are kept constantly on the watch At a signal from the warden the inner gate is unlocked and accompanied by Mr Shafer one of the guards wo enter passing through the old adobe building which has not yet been razed though work is proceedin daily in that direction into a I court in which the prisoners are allowed to take their exercise In thecenter stands a large brick building containing twelve tiers or altogether 240 cells 6x3 One hundred and twenty are now occupied giving accomodation to about 210 prisoners It is well provided with bath rooms washstands I wash-stands etc In winter the building is heated by steam and is a credit to the builders I build-ers The whole is under control of Warden War-den Vandercook and fifteen guards |
