Show THE SPORTING WORLD Hitchcock Drives Whittemores Otho to Win the 229 Trot DOLLY BROWN WINS THE PACE J If Brewa Glvei M Eibibltloa Mile With His Span of Trotters In 25112 AST day of the races was not the least in interest by any means i lAST contests in several of the classes for second t place being intensely in-tensely interest 1 I J r 7 ing Sam Hitchcock tl 1 S added new laurels ito i-to his splendid I record as a driver C by his fine handling hand-ling ofOtho winning the 229 trotting race In three straight heats against Bee and Jim McCord the latter backed by the talent in the pools as a favorite When Otho came down the stretch an easy winner win-ner of the decisive heat In 22SK the grand stand gave tho noble animal a cheer and there were call of bravo for Hitchcock and calls for Whittemore the owner Jim Gillespie again occupied tho position of starter and used good judgment in his sendoffs securing a fair show for all the horse and the approval of the grand stand for his rulings The attendance fell off somewhat from that of Friday yet tho grand stand was pearly filled and the spaces about the pool stands contained enough of the sporting I fraternity to back the Paris mutusls though the betting was much tamer than on the I preceding day The onehalf mile dash for a purse of 2i OO was a pretty contest between Blue Dick and The Jew Blue Dick winning the hea and race in 31tf RCSSISG THREEQUARTER MILE HEATS Zora drew the pole Comet second J place while Wedgefield was delegated to thin position in the threequarter mile running race Wedgefield having won first mone in the running races on the previous days was a big favorite in the pools and Part mutuals Comet ran away with the firs he at capturing it from Wedgefield in 120 but Wedgefields fine stayihg qualities and oven speed won him the second and thin heats SUMMARY Comot 1 2 2 Wedgefleld 2 1 1 Zora 3 dlst Time 120 121 and 123 230 PACING RACE PURSE 400 Dolly Brown drew the pole for the first heat tho other positions being Elder Lucas John Bond Lydia Allen Dolly Brown whipped about tho turn taking a safe lead and holding it to tho finish the other horses stringing around the track Lydia Allen broke John B passing hoi and overtaking Elder Lucas on tho homestretch home-stretch finishing in second place Lydia Allen fourth The second heat was only interesting at the finish Lydia Allen pushing Dolly Brown and forcing the little mare to come under the wire in 229 > John B third and Elder Lucas after a bad break finishing fourth The third heat started out very tame with Lydia Allen a good second but Pen dleton leaned over too much and Lydia lost her pins John B going forward to make a bad break Allen John B and Lucas were all off their legs at the same time and there was an exciting bit of mixing resulting I re-sulting in Lucas and John B both running under the wire Lydia Allen trotting home in good order in the fourth place 2 20 TROTTING RACE PURSE t4OO The horses that came up were the Bee drivenby Carson Otho with Hitchcock drawing the reins and Jim McCord with Itanier in the sulkey Otho drew the polo and help the lead for the mile finishing easy The Bee lost its feet on the first turn and fell so far behind that it was thought the Rabbit would be distanced The Bee kept at it and by a spurt of speed on ihe homestretch home-stretch caught Jim McCord sleeping and finished second sending McCord to the rear Time 2334 Hitchcock held Otbo in fice style for the second heat coming out several lengths ahead oftheBeo McCord finishing third Otho came up to the third and decisive heat stronger than ever end finished in 22Sl The Bee having a sure thing on second money hung back McCord was in second place but a bad Lrjak sent him to the rear the Bee finishing second SUMMARY Bee 2 2 2 Otho 1 l i Jim McCord 3 3 3 Time233J 230 228i BROWNS TEAM BEATS THREE 3IISUTZ3 After the regular programme was finished fin-ished Mr Gillespia announced from the judges stand that H Brown would drive his team at the pole to beat three minutes Fred Grant bad put up 100 that he could not do it Brown held the ribbons over Forest Wilkes and Saltair and they proved to be not only a handsome span of light bays but capable of going at a gait nearer 240 than three minutes Tho quarter was made in 45 the half in 127V the three quarters in 210 and the mile in 251K forest Wilkes only making two breaks in the entire mile and these were without any loss of speed So confident was Mr Brown that he could show better time than three minutes that ho carried his small boy with him |
