Show FORT DOUGLAS NEWS The Sixteenth and TwentyFirst Will Stay THE END OF TARGET PRACTICE Good Conduct at the Post Summer Campaign Contracts A Job for the Troops Squatters Ousted GAIN THE RUmors RU-mors are abroad regard to changes of troops at this post but we believe be-lieve the Sixteenth Six-teenth and Twen s tyfirst regiments are here to stay for some tim rumors ru-mors to the contrary con-trary notwithstanding notwith-standing Next week will close our target tar-get season It is fortunate as well as remarkable re-markable that no accidents have occurred during the two months shooting of nearly 500 men on the line at all times of the day Barring the SmithCarter shooting shoot-ing Fort Douglas has been exceptionally free from rows and fracases of any kind Several of the lieutenants and enlisted men will go to Omaha next month for practice prac-tice in the department team The post quartermaster Lieutenant Cowles returned from his trip to Deep Creek and Garfield some days ago He went out for the purpose of surveying the country for the summer campaign of the troops It is possible we go in that direction direc-tion but it is not yet decided Messrs White Sons company of Salt Lake have the contract at last to furnish the fresh beef for the fort for the next fiscal year commencing July 1 1S91 They have bad the contract for a number of years and have furnished very good beef to the troops The threo houses being erected for the noncommissioned staff quarters make avery a-very pretty appearance on an extended line on the southwest side of the post and at last the repairs to quarters on the circle are nearing completion These repairs were commenced abouttho first of last ApriL They say that Captain Bradleys company com-pany of the Twentyfirst leads in target practice We shall soon see for the work is nearly completed on the ranges with several of the companies to hear from A new outlet for tao sewers is being constructed con-structed Work was commenced on Friday This will be considerable of a job and will keep the troops busy some weeks The post cemetery has been trimmed up and Is looking very pretty We notice tha graves of many who died in Salt Lake City some years ago At last tho squatters on the creek in Red Butto canon were forced to leave These squatters consisted of a man and his wife who settled there some years ago built a small cabin and improved several acres of land This had a tendency to injure in-jure the water of Red Butte canon that supplies Fort Douglas The matter was referred to the territorial courts and a writ of mandamus was at last issued for their removal It is said they declined togo to-go and the woman threatened to shoot anyone any-one who interfered and that aoawtixari x r y I seven deputy United States marshals made a jump on the cabin one morning and arrested ar-rested the whole party the woman making considerable resistance A guard was then placed over the cabin and the waters of Red Butte canon have since flowed un disturbed This cafion is now filled with flowers and the finest of ferns There is no prettier place for picnics and parties There is an excellent driveway for some three miles into the cailon and it can also be reached by the electrio railroad from the city to the Fort |
