Show THE CHICAGO DERBY The Great Western Race i Won by Strathmeath HIGH TARIFF FALLS DOWN DEAD The Event Excited Far More Interest Than any of Its Seven Predecessors Immense ana Fashionable Audience CHICAGO June 20 Death to one horse 19000 to another that was the American Derby of 1S91 A scarlet flash on the horizon zon 50000 people breathless a gleam of white beneath the wire and the richest stake race in the west was over I was by Strathmeath New Yorks favorite that the battle was won Half a mile off where had been the thick of the fight lay motionless on the track the I cnrnsn nf TTtfrh TnmfF Tnm KVilltr rho cnl 0 0 o lat beats rider twice a Derby rider on that course had this time pushed the limit of equine endurance There was asudden plunge upward a queer stagger of twenty yards and High Tariff sank down into the mud lifeless Whether lfeless in point of horses famous jockeys magnificence mag-nificence of the fashionable display and marveleous outpouring of the people a well a the sensational incidents and the bulky purse probably no such race was ever witnessed this side of the Alleghenies certainly not in Chicago No one of the seven Derbys that in preceding years have made Washington parks celebrity more than fringed in interest todays event I The weather was very good being just cloudy enough to prevent the hot June sun I from making the day uncomfortable It i had been raining here for three days but I not a drop fell today Such a multitude of ladies a put in an appearance at the track a something unprecedented and Sc great was the crush that hundreds of them were wedged helplessly I in the enormous mob of male sports that packed the lawn solid in front of the betting ring No aisle or stairway stair-way in the grand stand afforded an inch of standing room the galleries and roof were black with geres while approaches ap-proaches from end to end of the stretch including even the club house grounds were full almost to suffocation In the field showed lint after line of all manner of vehicles loaded down with people peo-ple Everybody agreed that despite the yielding dustless condition of the soil that tuo rains naa lelt the race with the array of powerful animals entered was to be a magnificent struggle So intent was the huge concourse of people on the real event of the day that the first two races were passed almost unnoticed except when Isaac Lewis who was to ride Kicgman in the Derby appeared in the second race astride San Diego The friends of the Bluegrass Derby winner nave Lewis a volley vol-ley of encouraging cheers which were reechoed encourln echoed a he brought Santiago in a winner Many a misguided Kentuckian and other wellmeaning person now straightaway went to buying booth and pinned their faith and money on Kingman The confusion in the bookmakers quarters quar-ters a the time for the big race approached I was the worst ever witnessed in XVnKhJnp ton park and the bedlam scarcely mitigated miti-gated spread to other poruons of the grounds The roof over tho bookmakers heads in front of whom clamored thousands of eager gamesters had by this time become be-come thick with other thousands The police po-lice fearing the frail supports would give way causing perhaps the loss of scores of lives attempted to clear the platform Many jumped promptly into the mass of people on the lawn Suddenly the supports sup-ports creaked as the line of police forced back the crowd en masse and the fact was clearly demonstrated that it was less perilous per-ilous to allow tho reckless mob to remain unmolested reman The hubbub was at its height when the horses came oUt for the Derby the favorites favor-ites being warmly received This is the way they were recorded Snowball 12 Garrison and Passara 129 Faral post at-tempt of the less fortunate to secure advantageous advan-tageous positions from which to view the race Starter Sheridan mounted his box and returned the boys Then the horses were placed in line and ready for a start The first trial was false half a dozen frt tra fase hal refusing re-fusing to break The second attempt was without result At the third trial the te horses move in a sold phalanx place and Kingman third Passing tho stand these positions were sturdily maintained At tho turn Michael had worked to the front and sot a merry pace down the back stretch Poet Scout still second while Kingman and Strath meath went back to the bunch It was at this point that the sensation of the day took place High Tariff had started sixth and had been shoved relentlessly through tho heavy going notwithstanding his 127 pounds weight RIley by sheer force of will seemed determined to equal his last record and i within human possibility to again carry off the laurels Highland was visibly gaining and had passed three competitors when nature rebelled An instant later tho fleet racer was a helpless cripple floundering wildly in the mire Kiley regretfully tried to check the poor wreck and at lat succeeded suc-ceeded only a moment later to feel the animal tremble and fall in a heap The jockey hastily extricated himself unhurt I Meantime the pace of the others a getting get-ting hotter and if he might win but Covington slyly brought Strathmeath up by the outer roil with a rush stealing the former tactics of Kingmans rider and won by an open length without tho use of the whip Dr spur
