Show The Granite = = 3II11 I I There have been some spasmodic attempts at-tempts to work up a subscription to aid in the rebuilding and equipment the Granite Paper mill which was recently destroyed by tire This is something that deserves more thorough treatment THE HERALD doss not advocate the appropriation appropri-ation ol any public iunds for the purpose pur-pose Help should not come in the shape of a bonus as that term is popularly understood un-derstood The paper mill was of benefit to the public but it was a private enterprise enter-prise It should therefore be aided only by private means The company which was making it successful at the time of the disaster is not composed of great capitalists They are chiefly men of comparatively small means They had taken it in a depressed I condition of its affairs and were working j j it up to a position where it would have been at least selfsustaining if not I highly profitable They were animated with a desire to promote home enterprise and home industry They felt that Utah ought to be able to supply the home market with paper for all ordinary purposes pur-poses and their efforts bid fair to reach their full anticipations Fire turned them to ashes in an hour Several of our citizens have volunteered to subscribe to a fund to aid in the rebuilding re-building of the mill THE HERALD ap nroves of the movement but thinks it ought to be taken hold of in a more definite and organized manner If a committee of business men would undertake under-take to call on public spirited citizens of means for subscriptions and keep the matter in view persistently as in some other affairs that have been pressed upon public attention we beleive the necessary funds could be obtained and the Granite paper mill be placed on a better basis than it has ever assumed before It is an object worthy of a great effort |
