of Liens on School Buildings Gets the Jackson Heating and Ventilating Contract The board of education met in regular session last evening President William Nelson presided and all members were I present Parley L Williams sent in a communication I com-munication relative to the liens which have been served upon the board by various parties He was of the opinion that the liens cannot be enforced against the buildings by suit and foreclosed fore-closed but if there was any money due the principal contractor the board would be bound to hold such money to answer to the subcontractor or The commissioner of schools reported that the territorial auditor reports an additional ad-ditional 100000 of territorial school money arising from the tax of three mills on the dollar tor 1892 now subject to distribution II tribution Also that the apportionment to the territorial auditor had been re ported and that the latter would issue his warrant for the amount Mr Pratt stated verbally in connection with the report that there wasabout16000 of the amount not collectable at present as the county collector had refused to turn in the sumo sum-o the county treasurer except by an order or-der of the court The report was referred to thefinance committee A letter written by the Utah Stove and hardware company to the superintendent of buildings was read complaining that the hardware specifications for the Jackson Jack-son school building is inferior to that placed in the Lowell and Hamilton schools and suggested certain changes Referred to committee on Sites and Buildings instructions tructions tocut out such extra features are deemed unnecessary and then to solicit and report to this board at the earliest practicable moment revised bids from the bidders on the plans thus revised Carried MORA GETS A CONTRACT The committee on sites and buildings reported in the matter of the heating and ventilating of the Jackson school and recommended that inasmuch as the board had rejected the bid for a direct rect lowpressure system that the bid oi P J Moran to furnish a lowpressure gravity system with fan ventilation in accordance with the requirements of the advertisement which shall be complete in all of its several parts for the sum of 5935 Mr Moran had another bid in for a complete system of fan ventilation without the application of direct radiation radia-tion for the sum of 5532 With the firstnamed system whIm the tan is in operation the whole building can be warmed by indirect radiation After the dismissal of school and before school hours each day the building cane b can-e warmed by direct radiation It is also automatic in its operation and the ser vices of the janitor will be available dur I jog school hours and hence the committee com-mittee deemed the higher bid the best one under the circumstances Young moved to amend the report by adding theprovision that Mr Moran will agree to bear all expenses of every kind or nature including chancres in the building that may be incidental to the 1 complete installation of his proposed plant Carried The report was adopted TO KEEP OUT THE WATER The committee on sites and buildings recommended an increase in the thickness thick-ness of the basement floor from six to nine inches at the Jackson school and that a cement base be put on the inside of the outside walls up to the widow sills and an eightinch base on all the inner walls in order to make the basement water tight at a cost of 5510 not including includ-ing the base This was recomended on account the condition of the ground on which the building is located water being very near the surface The committee further recommended that the superintendent of buildings be authorized to plaster the entire ceiling of the basement with two coats of brown mortar at a cost not io exceed 5260 The report was adopted PAVING BIDS The same committee reported on works that may be necessary on the play grounds or on the sidewalks adjoining the school sites that the work could be secured as follows Metropolitan Stone company flagging not less than two inches thick or less than five superficial feet in each stone at 25 cents per square foot flagging intended for basement of buildings joints cemented not leas than three inches thick containing not less than five superficial feet at 30 cents per square foot Pacific Paving company Threeinch concrete basement and oneinch bitumen cus brick top 16 cents per square foot a curb of cement on the inside of the walk five inches high and twelve inches deep for 60 cents per linear foot Yhng olirst Houlahan Griffiths First class cement walk for 18 cents per snuare foot cement curb and retaining J wall 5 inches thick and eight inches deep for 35 cents per linear foot or 12 inches deep for 45 cents per linear foot The report was filed The same committee recommended that the two basement rooms in the Sumner school building be fitted up with warming warm-ing and ventilating apparatus so that they can be used for school class rooms and recommended that the bid of the Smead Warming and Ventilating company to do the work in firstclass style for 5200 Adopted A BRYANT CONTRACT SETTLEMENT The same committee reporting on the matter of the adjustment of claims against the Bryant school and the assignment or said claims to Davidson Hilton stated that all claims pertaining to the building had been referred to the attorney and considered con-sidered by tho committee and the latter recommended that the balance due on said contract of f 176993 be paid to the sureties sure-ties David Hilton and IR ltoJ Davidson David-son The committee also presented the bond in which the sureties are bound to the board to keep free and discharged of all claims etc on Millapaugh was submitted with the report re-port calling attention to the necessity ol selecting teachers for the coming school year at the earliest practicable moment and that the salary list should
