Show The SHyer Memorial The memorial to the President of the United States from tho business men of Utah which was published in jesterdays HERALD is a clear expression of the views and wishes of a large majority of thc people ot Utah on the silver question It also to1 esthe desires of a host in all the western states and territories It is avery auspicious time to address the President on this subject If similar memorials were seat to him from other parts of the country they could not fail to have a good effect Whatever views the President entertains on the coinago question he must bs impressed by the voice of the people And when he learns how go many of them feel in regard to this important matter and the cogent arguments argu-ments that can be brought to bear in support sup-port of bimetallism he must perceive that its advocacy is not merely from selfish self-ish motives on the part of silver workers but from a conviction and sound evidence that it is for the general welfare The memorial is forcible yet conservative conserva-tive in tono There is nothinc rash or inconsistent in its stat m ntsordemands While the grand point to be achieved is kept in view a willingness is exhibited to accept something as a compromise that will lead up to the desired consummation It is impossible to break down at once the barriers of prejudice against free coinage of silvsr but they may be removed re-moved gradually and in detail if a proper course is taken The memorial is a step in the right direction and THE HERALD endorses both the matter and the manner of its presentation The committee appointed to draft the memorial have done their work well and they deserve not only tho enthusiastic ap plntise which greeted their effort in the mass meeting but the thanks of all the supporters of silver in the groat west |
