magnificent II magnifi-cent structure was commenced on the 16th of June 1853 nearly forty years ago However these forty years do not represent repre-sent so many years of solid continuous work for there have been many seasons of inactivity occasioned In part by the poor transportation facilities prior to the completion of the railway from Salt Lake City south Those who cannot can-not recall the sight have undoubtedly read how the huge granite blocks were draw n by oxen from the mountains before the locomotive reached the quarries The round trip from the Temple block to the I quarries irequently took week or longer and the transportation wagons could only carry one stone thus it can be readily seen that progress was greatly hindered until the railroad trains ameliorated the situation CONCEPTION OF THE WORK Tha conception of this wonderful piece of architecture and masonry dates several years earlier than 53 When Brig ham Young and his party of pioneers pio-neers first placed their feet on what is now known as Temple Block which oC urred in the latter part of July 1S47 the great leader exclaimed Here will be the temple of our God Tnis decision took place on the evening of July 28 and was subsequently ratified by the apostles The temple block was originally calculated to contain forty acres of land and it was not until sometime some-time later that the axes was reduced to ten acres NotwithiSitidtBi that the temple at Kauvoo had only recently been despoiled nnd at which place they suffered to abide but a brief period the pioneers were jiirsious and zealous to commence pre Jiininary measures at once Their ambition ambi-tion and ardor only increased by the delay and when a general conference con-ference of the church was held in Salt Lake city in April 1851 the congregation voted without a dissenting voice to build a temple Utah territory contained about 10COO souls at that time I while Salt Lake city furnished about half of tho number THE TEMPLE COMMENCED The first actual work done on the proposed pro-posed temple commenced on the morning of the 14th of February 1853 On this m ning the first presidency and the ac < les directed the inauguration of the great undertaking Tho ceremonies cere-monies attending this inauguration included in-cluded an address by President Young music by the band prayer consecrating the ground by President Heber Kimball and the breaking of the ground for the I foundations by the apostles On the twentythird anniversary of the church April 6 of that same year the necessary excavations and ground work had reached so near completion that the customary j corner stone ceremonies could be performed per-formed THE CORNER STONE LAID I The programme of the corner stone lay Ing was very Impressive and took place In the presence of a large assemblage of people President Young delivered the j chief oration and Heber C Kimball offered of-fered the consecration prayer preceding the laying of the northeast corner stone while Bishop Hunter and Bishop Alfred I Cordon at the southwest corner stone President John Young and George B Wallace at the northwest corner stone and Elder P Prattand Orson Hyde at I the northeast cornerstone delivered the orations and prayers respectively I When the temple was first contemplated I it was thought that it necessarily would I hays to be builtrol adobes and sandstone th material used exclusively in the construction i con-struction of all buildings at that time However it was subsequently ascertained I that the Inexhaustible deposits of granite located at the mouth Little Cottonwood canyon could be utilized and as a natural sequence this handsome and durable stone was chosen for material INTERRUPTIONS TO THE WORK The work was quite seriously inter upted by the close proximity of John sons army in 1857 It was thought at the time that itwould be another Nauvoo exodus and the people made all preparations I prepara-tions for departure All of the inhabitants of tho city but a few who were left behind be-hind to burn and destroy departed south in the spring of 1858 leaving the Invaders a barren reception Peace was subsequently subse-quently restored the people returned and work on the Temple was resumed There were still more interruptions the country coun-try was subjected to a grasshopper famine at a time when all of the surplus strength of the community was required to aid in completing the contracts on the construction con-struction of the Union Pacific A serious delay occurred at the time when the receiver re-ceiver appointed under the Edmunds Tucker act to exercise their governing power relative to the escheated property of the church inaugurated the seizure of property including the temple which was taken possession of However the people were successful in regaining the temple property and the work of completing com-pleting the structue was again resumed with renewed vigor LATINO OF THE CAPSTONE The event of laying the capstone on April 6 1832 is of such a recent occurrence occur-rence that it would be superfluous to add in detail the frequntly accounts of decorations deco-rations crowds people
