| Show THE PEDAGOGUES Lecture Delivered by Professor Marshall Yesterday Salt Lake cuntys pedagogues met yesterday morning at the University of Utah being presided over by County Coun-ty Superintendent Allen Professor Marshall of the Utah University Uni-versity gave a very interesting lecture as to the method of teaching gra marin mar-in the schools He emphasled the importance im-portance of the teacher confining himself him-self or herself to one of the Important educational maxims Make haste slowly especially at the beginning I the subject is taught by first making mak-ing the two important elements of a I 1portant sentence as tne noun ana the verb prominent the other parts of speech I will come in natural sequence and may I be taught as their importance requires re-quires The teacher must present conI i Crete truths instead of including too i much of the abstract Were this important im-portant branch taught as its importance i Import-ance demands the feeling on the part of those who oppose it in the school i curriculum would pass away After the parts of speech and their properties proper-ties have been presented elementary I composition and analysis will follow Of the different authors upOn technical I techni-cal grammar the speaker commended Kens Common School Grammar a a I book of reference and Reed and Kellogg f Kel-logg because of the prominence made to lanaysis and diagraming An elementary outline of the method I of diagraming was presented on the board and its salient points brought out Professor Marshall also spoke upon the matter of teaching false syntax I syn-tax stating that when this method of teaching correct expression is ignored the cream of the work is lost A discussion dis-cussion then followed the lecture in which the construction of sentences and the relation of words to each other were considered Miss Brotherhood of the Utah University Uni-versity then read a paper upon the versiy subject of drawing She dwelt upon the great utility of this branch and I its close relation to other studies She I illustrated her subject by drawing upon the board and by charts and maps which explains very forcibly the subject in hand Relief maps w represented re-presented to the teachers being reached through a series of drawings in which plains mountains forms of water volcanoes coral islands trees etc were brought to view The lecture lec-ture was highly appreciated and was I attentively listened to |
