as completed The Boss Powers and Salt Lake Tribune combine herded its forces in the Salt Lake theatre yesterday to nominate a county ticket The absence of Powers left an aching void and there was a struggle to keep up appearances Mayor Baikin was not on the stage ExAssessor Clute was nowhere to be seen though Grabbage Showell was one of the most conspicuous Liberals on tie floor Watermaator Harvey was chuck full of gratitude and Colonel Ed Kelley fresh from New Orleans was given a position of honor Freddy Leonard the real father of the I convention after spending three months i in setting up the pines could not spare a I day on from his public duties to attend to his partys interests The entire morning session was given over to punning on a delegates name and to fishing out men who would father resolutions reso-lutions Judge Goodwin after the Ogden experiment could not be induced to try his hand again and C E Allen backed water The afternoon session was sot apart to put through Leonards slate Joe Lipp man had been agreed upon as the recorder H V Meloy as the clerk W J Lynch as tbe assessor and Fred J Leonard as the collector The slate went through to a man and although Charley Stebbins the miners friend had been toyed into the race he didnt cut any figure against Loonards pack After the slate had been voted in the convention con-vention adjourned until the evening to allow the bosses to select the best men to fit out the ticket The Tribune crowd was in high feather and thought they bud tbe scalp of Walter Murphy dangling at their belt Cot Nelson the managing editor of the paper was The chairman Editor C C Goodwin was in the body of the house to let the delegates know who he wanted Daveler the foreman of tho paper was theTeadmg clerk Thus equipped for the fight they bad it iJ for Walter Murphy the county attorney who had so far forgotten for-gotten his liberal ideas as to do what he believed to be right Murphy it will be remembered snubbed Powers by saying that he was beneath his contempt Powers had left his orders to have Murphy dished but Water after the menials of the bosses got tht > ir second wind came to the front in great shape defeating de-feating the man who Goodwin put forward and M M Kaighn the idol of the clique Mornins Session In the absence of O W Powers his partner Ogden Hiles was called to tbe presiding chair The delegates did not have long to wait for their chairman was already on the stage hid away among the scenes and properties When the assembled representatives of the Liberal camp ratified that part of the prearranged programme Mr Ogden Riles steppea forth Dink and white with the blush of confusion plashing in his cheeks with barber shop powder freely distributed over his whitened expanse ex-panse of brow It didnt take Mr Riles long t brush up his studied speech This campaign that confronted them was Vai styled the Austerhtz of Utah politics to determine de-termine whether Americans or Cossacks should rule the roost This according to Mr Riles was a question above the tariff for it would decide whether Utah is to have e country here fit for a whit man to live in These high sounding and breast appealing appeal-ing sentiments were received with the amount of stamping of the feet and chaff ing of the palms as is customary to extend to the first part of a minstrel show Elmer Ellsworth was selected as the man to fill the secretarys chair and he stepped forward with Ellworthian urbanity and took bis pen in baud GLENN THE COMMEDIAN The comedy part of the morning performance per-formance was enacted by C B Glenn who with his glasses adjusted to an angle that took in tho galleries movedihat one Bans Neilson be admitted on the floor as a delegate dele-gate from Draper which by some oversight was without representation Do you not mean Hans JSeHson asked a volco It may be Hans Nellson or Neils Hanson Han-son I dont know which but whatever his name I move he bo admitted After several minutes punning it was voted that all precinct which cast a single Liberal vote should be recognized by the committee on credentials ANOTHER JANGLE The next important business was to secure I committee on resolutions Jake Greene wald wanted ao ommittee of nino with O C Goodwin at its head Charley Stanton beaded this off by noti fying the convention that Judge Goodwin bad authorized him Stanton to decline the honor for him Goodwin for tbe reason rea-son that ho was overwhelmed with business busi-ness of a very urgent kind that would not admit of accepting the honor Judge C C Goodwin however was noticed no-ticed fooling away timo In the confab Then C E Allen was tendered the place but the Liberal candidate for delegate also saw I convenient to crawl outof the ugly Jugglery frords that it would bo necessary neces-sary to put together After a half dozen declinations were registered reg-istered a head for tho committee was found in the person of Colonel Wm Nelson Nel-son The time to make out Afternoon Session After an injunction against smoking chairman Riles called for the report of the committee on credentials credentals The chairman on permanent organization reported William Nelson as the permanent chairman A FDoremus vice chairman Elmer Ellsworth secretary Morris Soccers assistant secretary and Ed Kelley as sergeantstarms John Dvaeler on account of his stentorian stentor-ian voIce was selected as reading clerk Jno L May C O King and P O Perkins Per-kins were elected as the tellers to count in the state candidates C CHAIRMAN NELSONS RESPONSE I take i that my election means you dont wantmuoh talk There are very few things to be said at the present time we must let our acts speak louder than words We propose to elect the candidates candi-dates we nominate here today We must therefore make such selections as will be approved by all classes The nomination of select men is probably tbe most important impor-tant business before tho convention The men we select hero today will have the handling of large sums of money They will have charge of finishing the new court house The men we select must be above reproach We will now proceed with the business of the convention conventon THE PLATFORM Charley Stanton with great pomposity enunciated as the platform of undying principles upon which tbe Liberals stand to bo the following to wit The Liberal party of Salt Lake county i delegate convention assembled endorses and reaffirms with earnestness and enthusiasm tho Territorial Liberal Platform adopted at Ogden on Wednesday last and pledges its unswerving support to the nominations there mad We endorse the Liberal administration already al-ready had and expect a continuance of the satisfactory execution of county affairs by keep ing Libera in office v e recognize the continued existence of the Liberal party as the only real opposition to statehood and the one organized expouent of American patriotism In IJtah As to changed condi Ions we recognize with joy those that are useful and permanent an I claim that all these me the result of Liberal effort ef-fort and su cess We alSO scy that further i changes are needed but to be ueful and help i log these also must bo made by Liberals and under Liberal control Whereas prior to the Introduction or Lib Lb orals into office bull Lake county suffered largely by financial defalcations we pledge the Liberal officials to honest public accounting for every dollar and the proper execution of all gdeto cuton al eto rCcuton public trusts conflded to their i care We endorse the proposition of Issuing the bonds of Salt Lake county In n sum sufficient to complete the countys iblllty on the joint city and county building which being done the warrants of the county for all purposes will boat bo-at par We congratulate the Liberals of Salt Lake county on the bright outlook for their cause and the auspio ous prospects for the realization of their hopes We say to them proceed now to the nominated and withdrawn with-drawn Judge C C Goodwin presonted the name of a man who had worked along side of him for a long time and the two of them did one mans night work Laughter A n who had but one wife Josaph Lip un The next speaker dwelt on Lippmans friendships for labor Harry Duke moved that the rules be suspended sus-pended and Lippman went in by a unanimous unani-mous vote as one of the slate candidates A speech was demanded and Lip came to the platform He thanked the convention conven-tion for theplum He would promise his conduct in the future as it has been in the past Great in-vested his money in real estate H Y Meloy J C Conklin seconded the nomination of H V Meloy as a man who would cast I great credit on the Liberals of the county C C Goodwin had a candidate to name I and was willing to compare him with H V Moloy as to his looks My man be said I has only one fault his heart is too big Laughter His name is Charley Steb bins I Jacob Moritz nominated Clarence W Hal as a shining light of young Liberalism Liberal-ism I John Davelor in seconding Charley Steb bins said he knew him when he put on his I overalls and went down in the mine as any other miner and they the overalls I covered cov-ered a great heart Laughter I I 1 D Kinney bad a piece of history to recite re-cite When H V Moloy was a member of the Democratio club among the men who preferred office to principle there were three conspicuous examples W H Irvine Harry Duke and H V Meloy Irvine was I elected a member of tbe legislature Harry II T Duke was elected treasurer and H V Meloy had been a candidate ever since Judge Goodwin raised n good natured laugh by saying that he hoped the good Lord would forgive both DUKO and Meloy b The first ballot resulted as follows H V Meloy its Charles Stebbins 98 O W Hall 2 MELOY ORATES Meloy was called for and said Gentlemen of the convention I expected to have time enough between the third and fourth ballots to prepare a speech At the present time I am too full for utterance I will surely be elected on the 8th of Novem bor and I will perform the duties of my office to the best of my ability I will not tax the patience of the convention with a speech but 1 cannot refrain from expressing I ex-pressing to you my heartfelt thanks for the honor you have conferred upon me ASSESSOR C E Allen placed in nomination W J Lynch and he was elected unanimously Mr Lynch was called for and received an ovation He pledged himself to fill the office as ho had in the past in the following follow-ing words Gentlemen of the convention and fel I conventon low Liberals it is impossible for me to coin into words langauge with which to exprss the appreciation I feel of the honor you have conferred upon mo J can only say that I will continue to
