to i i confer with the officers of the road although i al-though a special car and free transports 1 tion were placed at the disposal of their j commIttee There is but little going on around the Rio Grande general offices in Denver today except a study of the situation on the second S sec-ond and third divisions aud Inquiries into tho condition on the remaining divisions one and lour Mr Jeffery LOOKS SERIOUS AND TROUBLED J but says nothing harsh against the men S who have gone out He does not even refer to them as strikers but still says I S that it is all the unfortunate outcome of action that I A GEXUEAL TIE UP t IS will result Indeed Presidant Jeffery expected I ex-pected to come to some sort of an agreement S agree-ment with the strikers today A grievance griev-ance committee was expected from Salida I at 10 am but the men would not coma t Denver and wired asking the president of the road to go to Sail and r confer with them on their own ground I i On receiving an invitation to come to Denver the chairman of the committee complained of having no S MEANS OP TRANSPORTATION Mr Jeffrey ordered a special train placed at the disposal of the committee to come from Salida to Denver and fixed a time for a meeting The offer was refused Up to 3 pI today nothing further had been done towards a meeting for a settlement settle-ment Chairman Coppelt of the board of directors arrived in the city over the RockS Rock-S Island at 103 pm accompanied by Charles C Beamsn one of the directors and who S is also the New York counsel for the board Mr Jeffrey met the directors and he and Mr Coppelt together occupied a carriage which was driven from the depot to the S Metropcle Mr Coppelt had 5O KNOWLEDGE OF THE STRIKE BTRK S save what lie had read in the Missouri River newspapers stood ready to S BELl OU THE STRIKERS In the Rio Grande telegraph office this was strenuously denied by an operator today to-day who said the report was a len le-n engineer who Is in the city from Division 4 was seen today When asked c regarding the rules of the brotherhood in relation to the strike he replied that he lad belonged t the order fourteen years S but that he had not attended any meetings for some time The brotherhood had regulations regu-lations S PROVIDING ron J BTRIKB The first thing In order was an investigation investi-gation through a grievance committee andS and-S as Putney would not say what instructions he had received from the department at Washington regarding re-garding the matter There were fifteen loaded mail cars hung up on the Rio Grande between Denver and Ogden The officials have takenno action because they thought the strike would be settled today but they are in consultation this afternoon and will take steps for moving the mail The western west-ern through mall can be sent via Cheyenne Chey-enne if necessary The Rio Grande Western Is receiving usual and taking all business offered President Jeffrey Chairman Coppell and Director Beamin are consulting together this hlternoon Chtrrnan Coppell endorced President Jeffreys action The men have been ordered toreturn to work The trainmen and conductors will do this but the engineers en-gineers refuse The men of the first division say they will stand by the road and will not strike There must be a crisis today Either the matter will be settled or there will be a very bitter war i
