conven-tion was held at Huntington on Saturday 1 r1 Oct 15 at 2 pm It wail an interesting occasion and a large number of citizens in addition to the delegates gathered from all parts of the county and attended More than usual importance was attached to the convention Because of the organization of an Independent party to which a number of Democrats had to some extent attached themselves and which had formulated a ticket containing tbs names of both Democrats Demo-crats and Republicans as candidates for county offices A temporary organization was effected by placing in the chair C E Larsen of c Castle Dale and appointing D M Tyler of Huntington as secretary Committees on credentials and anent 3 a-nent organization and order of business and on resolutions were appointed and a p recess of fortyfive minutes was taken On reRBsenibline the nresenoe of Hon C W Penrose was announced and he was called on to address the meeting In a brief but forcible speech he presented pre-sented the leading issues in the present pres-ent political campaign national and t locaL He also snowed the folly of Democrats who are in the majority in the county fusing with the Republicans for ativ nurpose and argued that the changes said to be needed in the county management could be effected by the Democrats Demo-crats themselves and that if they wanted the county seat removed as that was one of the features of the fusion movement they could vote for it just as well on e straight Democratic ticket as on any Independent In-dependent or other vcket He extorted them to union to place a ticket in the field representing all parts of the county and to vote unanimously for Joseph L Rawlins as delegate to Congress The speech wa punctuated with applause and much enthusiasm was aroused among the large audtebce assembled The committee on credentials then reported re-ported tho names of twenty delegates entitled to seats in the convention five distant dis-tant precincts being not represented The committee on permanent organization c reported the names of J W Nixon for permanent chairman Andrew Hood secretary secre-tary William Taylor chaplain and Mr Ovlaltsergeantntarms also tho order of business to be Roll call prayer By the chaplain report of committee on resolutions resolu-tions nomination of county officers appointment ap-pointment of county central committee miscellaneous business adjournment The report was unanimously adopted in Its entirety The roll was called and twenty delegates responded Prayer was offered by tho chaplain The committee on resolutions presented the following which were received with applause and unanimously unani-mously adopted by the convention RESOLUTIONS Resolved That wo heartily endorse and accept ac-cept the platform adopted by the National Democratic convention held at Chicago June 81 1B92 and also the platform adopted by the Territorial Democratic convention held at Provo October i 1892 That We will do all that lies In our power to elect Joseph L Ravtlings at delegate to congress con-gress from Utah territory That we favor tho Impartial expenditure of public funds so that every section of the country coun-try shall receive Its due proportion of the taxes for public improvements anal we repudiate the charges fabricated by the socalled Independent party against the present pre-sent officers of this county and deny with indignation in-dignation that they have prostituted their of fieLd trusts to selfish interests or the porpetua 4 lion of their political power also that they are either Incompetent as officials Contempitible gas men We regard these accusations as in su ting to the gentlemen so assailed end utterly false and without foundation in fact Thavwc pledge ourselves to support at the polls for county officers only the nominees of the Democratic party of every county > A number of gentlemen were placed in nomination for the various county offices and their claims and qualifications set f rth by their respective champions The r iult was that L P Overson of Clevo k id a present incumbent was nominated on the first ballot for selectman L C Jorgenson of Emery and R C Burch of Lawrence were nominated as selectmen after several ballots and their nomination made unanimous Carl WHburg of Castle Dale was ro nominated by acclamation for county clerk I and recorder A Tuttle of Orangeville received the A nomination lor sheriff after a sharp contest con-test j W Nixon of Huntington was Dlac don d-on the ticket for prosecuting attorney E W FoX of Orangoville for assessor William Wil-liam McCarlaln of Cleveland for collector L M Olsen of Proe for superintendent Sl of schools R 0 Miller of Castle Dale for treasurer William Taylor of Forien for coroner and George Fox of Oranceville fcr surveyor These nominations were all finally made unanimous No ono named on the fusion ticket received a nomination A county committee was organized with J K Reid SB chairman and JOUH Peterson as clerk As an appointment bad been made for a public meeting that C W Penrose of Salt Lake city might be beard on tbo issues c is-sues of the day and a host of people had assembled at g p m the convention adjourned ad-journed |
