Re-publicans The undersigned beg leave to represent to the Congress of the United States the Importance Import-ance of maintaining the present tariff upon lead ores and ores containing lead The question is a question of wages Wages being the same as in Mexico we would not need protection but we cannot pay living Wages to American miners and compote with lead ores mined by Mexican peons Removal or change of the present tariff means stifling of the great industry of lead mining In our country or putting our miners on a level I with the peons of Mexico Protection of lead ores Is protection of American labor Lead mining now gives direct employment at fair wages to about thirty thousand citizens of our country and indirectly to almost the whole population of the intermountain region Most of the articles used by miners tools steel machinery ma-chinery and supplies are protected by duties I such duties have the earnest support of lead I miners and they pay their tons of millions j yearly for articles BP protected We call Upon the manufacturers of such articles to help us keep our great industry alive that we may continue our extensive use of their products We say without fear of contradiction that any one of our groat lead mining commonwealths consumes more of the products of the manu I facturing and agricultural states than does the whole of Mexico To destroy our lead mining In order to benefit the smelting monopolies and I to build up the mining Industry in Mexico would while ruining us with equal certainty in I flict n heavy loss upon thosegfrom whom MO
