Show THE PRESBYTERIANS Their TIme Taken Up With the Trial of Dr llrl a POUTLAND Or May 28t the opening of the Presbyterian general assembly this morning notice was given that a formal protest would bo filed against the action on i revision taken last night A supplementary report of the committee on theological seminaries was presented which recommended that all students bo direcred to attend only schools under the supervision of the general assembly that the board of education bo instructed to make appropriation only for such students The former resolutions regarding the Union seminary were brought back almost unchanged The seminary is declared de-clared to have failed to comply with tho obligations the chair of biblical theology occupied by Dr Briggs is declared to be dc jure vacant declares de-clares the seminary living in difiance of iho veto of the transfer of Dr Briggs and nsists on the maintenance of the contract as interpreted by the general assembly in order to maintain confidence in the church and cannot acceed to the prayer of tIe seminary allowing a severance of relations J rela-tions It is recommended that the status sttus i quo be recognized as far as the difference E of opinion on the interpretation of the compact r com-pact and that the matter be given to acom COD it inittoo of five selected by each body who shall select another five than this commit 3 tc of fifteen be the committee of arbitration arbitra-tion A minority report ws entered lo king k-ing to a peaceful withdrawal and formation forma-tion of a new contract Further consideration consid-eration of the matter was deferred to Monday Mon-day morning The hearing of Briggs on the appeal was then resumed Both sides rested after arguments by McCook and Rev Lampe There was C lively contest as to whether the members of the New York presbytery and not the commissioners should have the right to speak and it was decided in the affirmative affirma-tive At tho afternoon session tho roll of the presbytery was called and Dr Bliss spoke upon the correctness of the stenographic report of the proceedings Several other I members of the presbytery also spoke Different members of the assembly were then heard at great length expressing views pro and con Just before taking a vote the moderator stated that the assembly I assem-bly is competent to reverse the judgment of the presbytery and send the case back for trial upon the samo charges and specifications speci-fications but i is not competent for the assembly itself to try the case upon its merits Tho reading of the specifications and voting went on the affirmatives coming com-ing with a prolonged emphasis and each speciflcator being maintained by about tho same vote Upon the final question the yeas and nays were called and the vote announced as follows Sustained nssv wholeu unuun 302 Sustained in partnn unuunu 12 Not sustained 87 sustaied uu uu UU 8 Total uu 510 Judge Saylor then moved that the verdict of the Presbytery of New York bo reversed in all particulars par-ticulars all papers returned to its stated clerk and the presbytery ordered to proceed to the trial of the case upon its merits This resolution was referred to the committee which was ordered to report re-port it on Monday morning and the assembly as-sembly adjourned |
