Show BELIEF PROMISED I Delegate Caine Asks for Permit to Cat Timber And the Commissioner of the General Land Office Suggests Means to That End There has been great complaint from different parts of the annoyance and hardships hard-shiPs that the people of Utah were enduring endur-ing through tho failure of the department of the Interior to grant permits to cut timber on the public lands as provided bylaw by-law The delay from one allowed cause and another on the part of the interior department depart-ment in effect denies to the people a privilege which tho law says they may have and in this respect the law has been nullified through the failure to carry it into effect Delegate Caine has been appealed ap-pealed to by millowners and citizens and i we learn that he has had several interviews inter-views with the commissioner of the general land office respecting tho matter and urged the department to take action upon the many applicationo for permits to cut timber which were filed more than a year ago The enclosed communications speak for themselves We publish them to show the mill and lumbermen that there is some prospects of relief in tho near future and also that the delegate has not neglected their interests HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES U S 1 WASHINGTON D o March 21892 j To the Honorable the Commissioner of the General Gen-eral Land Offloe Washington D C DEAR SInI forward herewith a petition to the secretary of the Interior which came enclosed en-closed to me The petitioners represent that they ore put to much Inconvenience and disadvantage disad-vantage through the great delay which has c > P curred in granting permits to cut timber on tho public lands in the territory of Utah the petitionersask and I think their request is a reasonable one that pending the inspection inspec-tion of timber lands ordered by department a temporary permission be given to sawmill when to cut and remove timber for tho use of the settlers in the immediate neighborhood of such mills The present status works a great > inwTcVil tn + li vftiOH nonnl nf Ilio tpmtorv 1 v UlU JUl u u J who are so unfortunate as to live away from the lines of railroads Ihoy cannot secure lumber for domestic uses and without it there is an end to all improvement They cannot even repair their houses and fences and everything every-thing Is at a standstill I submit that these people are entitled to relief re-lief and the government should either cut the timber ana sell it to them or permit the mill owners to do so I also enclose for your information a letter addressed to me by Messrs Blaclmer Son and Stewart of Beaver Utah which sets forth the dIfficulties under which the people of that section sec-tion are laboring for want of lumber I respectfully ask for early consideration of this subject and the adoption of some means which will bring the people the desired relief without further delay Very respectfully JOHN T CAINE DEPARTMENT OF TilE INTEUIOK GFNERAt LAND OFFICE V WASHINGTON D C April 16 1892 Hon John T Catno use of Representatives Washington D t SIrI have the h < > r to acknowledge tho receipt re-ceipt of your letter dated March 2i 169 l enclosing enclos-ing letter from Blackner Son Stewart of Beaver City and a petition signed by a 1 number of the citizens of Utah territory complaining of the hardships entailed upon them through the delay of this department to act upon applications appli-cations under the act of March3 1891 20 Slat 1093vto cut timber from public lands In the lf said fenl ory Respecting the matter complained of I bog to say that this office has transmitted your letter let-ter with enclosures to the honorable secretary secre-tary of the interior suggesting for his approval and instructions measures which it is hoped will afford the desired relief Very respectfully respect-fully THOMAS H CAKTHI Commissioner |
