session It began yesterday with an at tendanco that far surpassed all oxpecta c lions Tho early trains yesterday morning brought many drovers who have come to deliberate in the great meeting The freedom free-dom of the city has been given tham and they surely appreciate the hospitality of ell Ogden citizens At 11 oclock in the morning a procession was formed by tho delegates from the several sev-eral states and territories and headed by the Ogden city brass band marched through the principal streets At 1130 oclock the meeting was called to order in the Grand opera house by E M Allison jr of Ogden who placed in nomination for temporary chairman Major J R Elliott which was declared the unanimous unani-mous choice of the congress R L Armstrong Arm-strong was chosen temporary secretary Judge J H MacMillen delivered a speech of welcome on behalf of Ogden city and Weber county and assured the visiting visit-ing delegates that the latch string on every door in Ogdcn was at their service and if they went to their homes feeling that they hod not been properly entertained it would be their own fault Mr A S Mercer of Cheyenne in a few well chosen words replied to Judge Mac Millen on behalf of the cattlemen and hoped that when the congress had performed per-formed its work that Ogden and every delegate would be profited by it The nex order of business was the appointment ap-pointment of committees On credentials each state and territory being entitled to representation the committee com-mittee was made up as follows A B Hayes of Ogden chairman Wyoming E D Swan Ogden City band the chairman Elliott again rapped the meeting to ardor The various committee were instructed to report immediately on reconvening in the afternoon The committe on credentials reported I ardar of business was read which was fol DI h lowed by an address from Governor Thomas Ho spoke to some length and welcomed the cattlemen here on behalf of the territory of Utah He pointed out a number of questions in which he believed the congress should for the benefit of the groat cattle interests of the west deliberate delib-erate At the close of tho governors remarks It was announced that the street cars were in waiting to conduct the delegates tG tho Hot springs whoro they wero to be tendered a delightful bath and reception by the citizens I citi-zens of Ogden The congress was now fully organized and ready for business and in order to take advantage of the Hot springs excursion excur-sion an adjournment was taken until 9 oclock this morning XOTES The congress tendered Governor Thomas a vote of thanks for his able address I The South Omaha headquarters are called by some of the delegates Skinners Oil rooms Tho street car company bad the cars that convoyed the drovers to the Hot springs literally decorated with flags and bunting Todays session of the congress will likely be a very interesting one The organization being complete they are ready for business The Kansas City delegation have been slow about getting their headquarters established They have quite a longing for Skinners oil rooms Some of the Omaha delegation had Mr Skinner the jolliest one In tho South Omaha crowd telegraph to Manager W N Babcock of the Union Stock Yards company com-pany at thai place to come to Ogden and attend the congress He replied I am too busy building an addition to the stockyards stock-yards to accommodate all tho shipments from cattlemen now at Ogden to leave here Democratic Mass Conventions Democratic mass conventions were held throughout tho city last night for the purpose pur-pose of selecting delegates to the territorial convention which meets in the Grand opera house on the 15th of May The following fol-lowing delegates were chosen First Ward John Adultery Charles Morris formerly proprietor of the Central hotel was arrested yesterday by Deputy Marshal Bowman on tho charge of adultery alleged to have been committed with one Lena Wright Morris will be arraigned before Judge Bishop today but it is undoistood he will waive examination He gave bonds for his appearance This is the third time Morris has been arrested on the same charge Tried to Bun Away William Smith an eighteen year old incorrigible in-corrigible sent to the reform school from Salt Lake made an attempt to escape yesterday yes-terday The line guard was down town at the time but he was seen taking to his heels by other guards who screamed to a man by the name of Jones to stop him The fellow showed fight to Mr Jones and a lively tussel ensued Smith is of stout heavy build and landed his assailant on the ground with a heavy blow injuring his arm fearfully By this time the guards had arrived and the unruly lad tied down and taken back to the house of correction 4 News From La Plata The Red Jacket Milling and Mining company has resumed work again on their claims A largo force of men will bo put on again on the first of the month Tho road will be open by Monday and tho company com-pany will begin shipping ore the last of the week Mr A W Richardson the manager mana-ger of the Red Jacket says they have over fifty cars of ore in sight now The company will also put on two shifts on the Queen of the Hills H B West over the president IS of the opinion the company will be able to pay a dividend i divi-dend in about ninety days I The outlook for the camp improves
