Show I GOOD FOR IHE GOVERNOR We hope no Democrat will join in i the senseless clamors which some rabid Republicans are raising against the course pursued by Governor West as to the socalled industrial army which invaded this territory We do not consider it the duty of any Democrat Demo-crat to approve wrong action on the part of a public rofficial because he belongs be-longs to the Democratic party At the same time we have little respect for a member of that party who becomes I merely a Republican echo and without good cause joins cm the chorus of partisan par-tisan blasts against the house of his friends If Governor West had followed the donothing policy which some people think would have been proper and had permitted the thousand or more hun I gfy and desperate men to have swarmed into Ogden and dictated terms to the railroads and the citizens I the outcries of these faultfinders would have been thunderingly vociferous They would have cursed hini with the same lips that are now casting blame upon him Why says one loud mouth they are a mere handful of unarmed men and are quiet and peaceable Just so And how long would they have ic mained unarmed pr quiet or peaceable when they found themselves without food and further transportation and no imposing force t6 awe them into order or-der Many of them are no doubt decent de-cent fellows enough but unfortunate and destiute yet there are some known criminals among them and many hard characters who would not hesitate to rush to great extremes in an emergency emer-gency and who would carry the crowd with them r We believe that Ogden owes its safety and exemption from disorder if not bloodshed to the prompt and energetic ener-getic action of Governor West who has exhibited a vigor shrewdness and firmness which should gain for him the plaudits of the people of Utah of all parties The position he has assumed has been theright one and so say the courts He has studied that rather than ease expediency He could not he a party to the cheapest and simplest simp-lest way out of the difficulty the forwarding for-warding of the army eastward to the I territorial line because that would have been officially wrong And he would have ben following the pernicious pernici-ous example of the Governor of California Cali-fornia who was a party to the outrage out-rage inflicted upon Utah by the Southern South-ern Pacific railroad company Governor Wests action needs no defense de-fense Its speaks I for itself Itis I worthy to go on record It will be applauded ap-plauded by the beat and wisest men of this nation It may suit the purpose of some Republicans to belittle it That is what might be expected from such a source But no Democrat who is sane and sober ought to join with them in their carping criticisms nor cast a clod where ought to be strewed the flowers of praise Ogden owes its safety to the wise precautions that have been taken and who knows that Salt Lake city would not have been invaded if the steps to check the army had riot been taken in time Partisanship is run to the extreme ex-treme of meanness when it censures the Governor for performing his imperative I perative duty and doing it well |
