Show STATE BANK TAX BILL Democrats Resolve Ill t the Tax Should Be Rciiculetl Washington April 10The Democratic Demo-cratic caucus after a session of two hours and a half this evening adopted the following resolutions without a dip ten Ling Vote Resolved That it is the sense of o this caucus that the prohibitory tax of 10 per cent on bank issues be repealed Resolved That when the bill known as the Brawley and Spencer bill which the committee on banking and currency has ordered reported to the House is called up for action an amendment be offered repealing the jnohibitory tax on state banks that Ample time be afforded for discussion and if necessary to secure this the committee on rules be required to take proper action acton Exactly 102 Democrats of the House v ere pr sent The attendance from the southwest was very heavy but only 3 few eastern men appeared among them being Messrs Strauss Cum wings Dunphy and Warner New Connecticut ONeill Massachusetts York Pigot Connectcut ONfi s sachusetts and Sibley Pennsylvania The discussion of the repeal of the state bank tax proceeded in a desul toy way for a time and took a wide range Mr Culberson of Texas chairman of the judiciary committee made a strong speech in favor of it After some further talk the above resolutions were offered the first by Mr Cox of Tennessee and the second sec-ond by Mr Cuiberson There was but little diversity of opinion in the caucus 7i cau-cus on the question of the advisabil I T r M < 1 ty of taking up for consideration the question of the repeal but there was some opposition of the repeal but pealThe some opposition to unconditional re The only outspoken opponents of any measures looking to the repeal of the state bank tax came from Messrs Bryan Bry-an of Nebraska and Lane and Wil iams of Illinois Messrs Gresham of Texas Swanson of Virginia Catch tugs of Mississippi Cooper of Indiana and others ardently favored the proposition prop-osition Mr Cummings of New York made a ringing speech at he end in favor of the repeal With the conclusion of this speech the resolutions were adopted and the caucus adjourned The result of the caucus means that the bill to repeal the tax on state banks shall be considered as a rider t the Bailey bill which is now on the calendar and that a vote shall be had upon It |
