speculation specu-lation was rather dull today and the movement of prices was unimportant I was almost entirely a local traders home market neither London nor big operators buying to any great extent The arbitrage houses did however buy Atchison and Denver Rio Grande preferred in small lots The apparent tendency of che foreign exchange market mar-ket points towarJ hardening and had a depressing influence on the market inasmuch in-asmuch as it relieved the talk of gold I exports Exchange is not up to the shipping point but it w regarded as not unlikely that the rates may advance tomorrow or Friday so nrf to render the exportations of gold profitable At the opening prices were generally higher than at the close yesterday but soon took a downward turn After midday mid-day the speculation assumed a firm tone and a steady advance took place but of small proportion1 which was in progress pro-gress until 145 Then came a selling movement in which the earlier improvement improve-ment was lost and a lower range of prices was established In the final deaings purchases to cover short contracts caused a fractional frac-tional rally and the market closed slightly firmer nut at a decline
