Athletic Tournament During the Tuscarora fair at Cal ders the past week there have been so many events that the sporting features did not stand out so prominently as they would otherwise As matter of fact these contests have proved a veritable ver-itable athletic tournament in which all kinds of sport had a place The American Derby Much interest was taken by local horsemenin the American derby which was run off at Chicago yesterday especially espe-cially as a book was open at the Oxford Ox-ford The betting here was very light however One ticket the winner was sold The Chainless Bicycle Those who read the article in the Sunday Sun-day Herald concerning the invntion and gradual perfection of the bicycle as evidenced evi-denced by the high grade safety of today wU no doubt recall that mention was irade of a new and improved wheel called the League Chainless This wheel which has been on the market about a year has attained a popularity that is truly marvelous and in another season will almost entirely do away with chain driven bicycles Mr C E Johnson who by the way was the first to advocate and import ladies bicycles to this city has just received one of each style for lady and gent of the Chainless wheels The mechanism Is of the simplest nature being be-ing a pair of bevel gears enclosed in a neat aluminum dustproof case giving perefct protection to either skirts or trousers and rendering the divided skirt quite unnecessary The wheel runs much smoother than the chain wheel and for j hill climbing is said to be unsurpassed The gears being enclosed and dustproof will last a life time and about one oiling in three months is sufficient The curved frame of the Hadles wheel drops at least four inches lower than any other in the market giving plenty of room for the i skirts The wheel is on exhibition in JohnsonPratt Drug Cos window II I I Wheel Notes I Regarding the wooden rim for bicycles a subject on which there Is considerable difference of opinion theoretically the r Bicycling World has the following to say Wooden rims received a severe test In the many road races held last week and were not found wanting In the Chicago road race one man rode three miles upon the bared wood rim of his front wheel I from which the tire had slipped and it is safe t say that this could not have been I done upon an inelastic metal rim In fact the manner in which the light vheels stood up over the heavy roads upon which some of them were driven was a matter of note none of the wheels that were ridden by racing men of any reputation I weighing much over twenty pounds while some scale but nineteen and yet the I percentage of break downs except through collision was almost nil I The facts In the case are respectfully commended to our English brethren who I have been hesitating about adopting the wood rim I Baltimore has decided to follow the example ex-ample of Philadelphia and Boston and will mount somo of its park police on I wheels I Is probable that PostmasterGeneral I BIssell will grant permission to Postmaster I I Postmast-er Hessing of Chicago to advance necessary i neces-sary money for equipping a few of his letter carriers with bicycles The money used is to be a loan to the men to be finally returned to the government in In stalments The postmaster in a recent communication suggested that a part of the car fare allowance be used for the purpose on the ground that too much I time Is lost In waiting for cars in going to and from the outlying districts outying lstrIct World I Thus does the bicycle encroach upon all other methods of enabling humanity to get there Salt Lake mal carriers have I been riding wheels for some time The way they treat bicycle thieves in 1 I old England ought to be adopted in this country Two recently arrested were given three and five years respectively in durance vile i The Princess of Wales although not a I rider Is very much In favor of bicycling for women and gives freely her countenance I counte-nance through the press to it A young man caused a great deal of excitement ex-citement in Washington D C last week by skating up Pennsylvania avenue mounted upon f pair of bicycle slate Although this new means of locomotion locomoton made its appearance in England last year they have never yet been publicly ex publcly hibited in this country The CurtisChild Manufacturing company of Philadelphia Is arranging to manufacture these having secured a number of the principal patents I The bicycle is a thoroughly Christian machine for it improves the temper discourages dis-courages dissipation takes a man look on the bright side of things and puts I vivacity into his religion Rev Dr Scud der Jersey City relgonRev The great event of the season will be on the July meet 4 at the State street grounds The ten mile road < race to be rm on July 10 is attracting much atten I tion The start wH be male from the I halfway station or the UtahNpvada line and the
