thfikfourth time since the American derby was inaugurated in-augurated the black jacket red maltese cross red jash and cap of Lucky Baldwin were first under the wire frt His bay colt Rey el Santa Anita 4 to 1 In the betting won the race easily by six lengths in 236 flat equalling the best time ever made in the race Senator Grady finished second and Domino Dom-ino favorite in the betting was absolutely last The track and weather were perfect per-fect for the race I could not hav been improved upon Durirsr the early part of the afternoon a gentle breeze blew from the south not enough to interfere in the slightest degree with the running but when the derby horses were called t the post there was enough air moving to carry away cigar smoke Between 230 and 330 oclock several smart dashes of rain came down but they were short lived and in no way affected the track or had any result on the race save to make a few betters rush to put money on Rey le Santa Antia who 4s a mud horse Had there been no promise of mud these bets would never nave gone on as few believed that Rey el Santa Anita had any chance on a good track Anit against such cracks a Senator Grady Domino and Dorian The saddling bell for the derby rang at 345 and the bugle calling the horses at the post sounded live minutes later Alcenor was the first to appear on the app track and was followed by Resplendent both horses being cheered as they moved past the grand stand Despot carrying the green and white colors of Edward I Corrigan was third and Prince Carl Orinda and Rey el Santa Antia left the paddock in a bunch The horses paraded past the grand stand in the order named Domino Dorian and Senator Grady coming i com-ing down the stretch from the stables ana swinging into the parade from the rear The three eastern horses were cheered to the echo the vast majority of the I public being on one of the three to win The horses cantered slowly to the starting start-ing post where Starter Pettin lll a post them After a few attempts the Hag fell to a good start with all the horses being efo bunched The Start Domino was away frst with Despot at his neck Rey le Santa Anita third the others In a bunch with the exception of Senator Grady who was oft last and in a bad position Alcenor went out to make the running and at the quarter was leading lead-ing by a length Domino second half a length in front of Prince Carl Resplend rent r-ent fourth Orinda fifth Rey el Santa I Anita sixth Dorian seventh Atlas eighth Despot ninth and Grady last As the hcrses turned to come toward the grandstand grand-stand they were all bunched close up against the rail Domino Dorian and Grady being pocketed without any earthly earth-ly chance of getting through As they few past the stand Resplendent collared Alcenor leading by a lengtn iTince carl being third by a head Garrison here got out of the pocket in which he had been held and pulling Grady to the outside Sent him to the fourth place The Senator was running easily under a strong pull and seemed to have any amount of speed in reserve Domino was running leisurely in the fifth place Dorian was eghth and Van Kuren had taken a strong wrap on Rey el Santa Anita and was last by a length Just before the three quarters was reached Garrison made a play which in the opinion of many lost him the race He saw a chance to get ihe lead and loosening loos-ening up on Senator Grady he sent the nonoC brown son of Iroquois I to the front like a flash He passed everything in front of him a though they were standing still and then pulling over next to the vail he kept the Senator going as though he was making a run away race of I Rey el Santa Anita Gain Taral on Domino and Van Kuren on Rey le Santa Anita evidently held this opinion for they at once cut loose and went after the Senator at a smashing pace At the mile Grady was a length and half to the lead and like ad te ad going lke a scared dog Rey le Santa Antic had come up with a rush from the seventh place at gew threequarters and was becond ahead a-head in front of Alcenor Domino was fourth a half length In front of Resplendent Re-splendent Prince Carl Dorian Despot and Orinda In the order named the latter tiring fast lter After leaving the mile post Van Kuren gave Rey le Santa Antis his head and the colt began rapidly to clrse In on Senator Grady He was at his flank then at his head and then began to draw away in a nanner that left no doubt whatever that unless some horse in the hunch could run rn past Senator Grady and catch the leader the derby was over then and there At the mile and a quarter he was three lengths ahead of Senator Grady uid run rn ning strongly Prince Carl came up to third place and was a half length in front of Domino on whom Taral was now making every effort Into the Stretch As they turned into the stretch Rey el Santa Antia kept his pace and opened up daylight between himself and Senator Grady and Domino I a way that was heartbreakinir to those who ha money en Grady and Domino He was full four lengths in the lead and drawing away at every jump Taral called on Domino for a final effort and the colt responded game ly but his time had come and the horse which had never been beaten could do little toward Improving his position Despot came up with a rush and passed Domino psed Dorian closed on him and pained with wih every stride I was all up with Domino and Taral realizing the fact pulled him up and galloped slowly in As the horses neared the wire Rey le Santa Antia opened up six lengths and had pe Anta spare Grady was coming hard two lengths ahead of Despot who had come very fast through the stretch Van Kuren sat leisurely on Santa Anita now and then turning his head to watch Garrison and Senator Grady The Baldwin horse won by six lengths pulled up and with speed t throy up Senator Grady who might have stood f rSh glnlfr gln = better show of winning if Garrson had saved calling upon him him for before the stretch the lace instead va s half of over was second by two lengths Garri son riding for his life to stave off Des pot who was closing rapidly Prince Carl came fourth four lengths behind Despot and the rest vere
