Show TARSXEY TELLS InS STORY It Is a Miracle That He Escaped an Awful Death Denver CIo June 23A representa Aicve of the Associated Press called ups up-s J on General Tarsney at his residence this evening His story of his experiences experi-ences differs from that already related only in that it is more detailed During Dur-ing the day physicians attended him and succeeded in removing every parti cle of the coal tar and from his neck down there remains no trace of his experiences beyond an occasional abrasion abra-sion of the skin His face however is inflamed and blistered because cf the kindly intended services of a woman who removed the tar from face neck and hair by the use of coal oil After finding himself surrounded by the kidnapers in the office of the hotel ftp was informed that he was to be killed He requested time in which to write to the members of his family but was informed that there was no time to waste Then he was roughly Wiustled into the hack and hurried away When the open country had been yreaehed his captors look him from the i lack to a place removed from the road The masked men with oaths and imprecations im-precations formed a circle about him and again he was informed that he was to be killed At the suggestion of the leader every man who felt so disposed told the general what they proposed to do with him why they proposed to do it and their opinions of him He was accused of waging war against the mine owners and the deputies depu-ties he was accused of handling the state troops in the interest of the strikers he was accused of issuing an order to the troops to fire upon the deputies with the twelve pounders and finally he was accused of indirectly being be-ing the cause of the death of the deputies depu-ties who were killed during the Bull Hill campaign For these things they proposed to kill him Every humiliating humiliat-ing epithet that profanity and obscenity i could suggest was hurled at him When all those who wished to had had their say General Tarsney was given an opportunity to speak for himself him-self Without a thought other than that he a in the presence o death rut determined I de-termined tounake every use of his only weapons argument and peru ision that his life might be spared to his family he pleaded as he had never done In court He rehearsed the entire situation during the time the troops and deputies wAre in the field He explained to them that he a not In command of the troops but that General Brooks was in rcmmand under Governor fl Waite the commanderInchief I was true he mingled with the miners but JJ he had not tried to shield the leaders by withholding their names for he knew their names only by newspaper and other common report When the order to fire the artillery upon the deputies was given he was miles away from the scene He knew that the men before him but a few days before had stood at the graves of their comrades who had been killed but as he was not In command of the troops he was in no manner connected with their death I die he must die he would but they had the wronir man and punishment by death would be unjust to him When he had concluded the mer z f helda conference and decided to give the sreneral 100 lashes When informed t > in-formed of this General Tarsney requested r i re-quested them t shoot h3m a he could never survive the punishment necr punihment an death by the bullet would be more merciful The lea der then turned tc we of the men and told him to get i J lis implements and do his work The nan spoken to went away and In 8 ew moments returned with a pail of cal tar a brush or rag and a feather willow The general was disrobed and Jener the coat of tar and feathers applied When the dirty work was finished and the general was daubed from head t foot he put on his clothing He was then forced down the road and the leader said to him Roswell lies In that direction Go down that way and dont turn back Keep straight ahead Dont ever step foot in Colorado Springs or Cripple Creek again or your life will pay the forfeit So unepectedly had life been given the tortured man so great the strain through which he had passed and so severe were his physical sufferings that he scarcely realized the situation Nevertheless he started on his way back without looking back to see i he were followed His ears however were unnaturally awake to every sound and after walking about two miles he thought he heard horses hoofs in the rear Fearing the fiends who had tortured him had repented of having allowed him to escape with his life and that they were in pursuit of him to kill him he left the road and concealed himself After a painful pain-ful Interval the horsemen General Tarsney felt convinced had either given giv-en up the search or had turned off on a cross road so he resumed his walk Continuing in the direction indicated by his persecutors the suffering man walked fourteen miles The ta stiffened stif-fened about his person and walking caused excruciating pain Several times he decided to apply at one of the farm houses for help but hatless in soiled clothing and his face covered cov-ered with tar and feathers he feared he would frighten the people to whom he might apply But his fatigue and injuries became too severe and finally he knocked at a farmers door A woman responded to her summons and was almost overcame with fright General Tarsney assured her he was a human being and asked her to call the men She did so and after convincing con-vincing the farmers who he was and after relating his experience everything every-thing that could be done for him was done He was urged to eat breakfast but could only swallow a cup of coffee cof-fee A neighbor was summoned who brought a horse and buggy Although the newcomer was one of the deputies who went to Cripple Careek his indignation in-dignation was aroused He gave General Gen-eral Tarsney a revolver took one him self and saying I they come after us we will go down together began the drive to Palmer Lake Trouble was feared at Palmer Lake but the deputy stood by his charge even coming to Denver and tonight is a guest in the generals residence Sympathetic people were found here and everything possible was done to relieve the mans sufferings He was made as comfortable a possible telegrams tele-grams were sent to the state officials i and to the family here and the welcome I wel-come news was received that a special train was on the way to carry him 1 home Aboupt 4 oclock the train Arrived Ar-rived bearing Mrs Tarsney the eldest daughter Susie and Mrs Bachtell I wife of General Tarsneys law partner The affecting meeting over the train I made all haste to Denver which place was reached after 5 oclock and everything I every-thing that medical skill and affection could suggest was done When first seen last evening General Tarsney appeared to be prostrated but was sitting up In the reception room Conversation at first was evidently carrie on by a supreme effort Gradually Grad-ually the sufferer became more animated ani-mated When he began to talk of his lo him humiliating experiences his feelings overcame him To have continued the interview would have been merciless and the reporter withdrew The genral when asked whom he blamed for his sufferings replied that he had nothing to say on the point He also said he would take no steps to personally prosecute his tormentors I I The Committee Aroutcd Colorado Springs June 23At theme the-me thg of the committee of public safety to take action regarding the outrage perpetrated on Adjutant
