Show BUILDING DWELLING HOUSES A correspondent in this issue of THE HERALD offers a suggestion in regard to the use of brick There is something of a supply of brick on hand and in a few weeks the kilns in this city and adjacent tot to-t will be turning them out at the rate of about four hundred thousand a day At this rate it cannot be long before the market will be fairly well supplied and by July the output will be sufficient to keep all going From that time forward until the close of the season there will certainly be enough brick to satisfy the demand Our correspondent proposes that the early building operations be confined to cottages and residences the larger buildings for stores and offices being held until later in the year when there will be more material The proposition is a good one and in the interest of the public welfare There is today a grievous scarcity of dwelling houses and tho matter grows worse daily Families are crowded together two or three in houses intended for only one office buildings are occupied by families that would like to reside in private homes away from the business streets and there are all lands of temporary makeshifts Agents inform us that there are now filed with them applications for hundreds of dwelling houses the monthly rent ranging all the way from 10 to SlOO The supply being exhausted and the demand great now what may be expected when the spring shall open and the expected rush set in If the influx should be anything like so great as is threatened places on which to pitch tents will be at a premium during the spring and early summer It would therefore seem wise to confine early building operations largely to dwelling houses which will be in such great demand and for which there will be absolute necessity neces-sity With the brick now on hand and the first burnings from the kilns a good many cottages can be erected and by the time the hordes begin to pour in we may bo somewhat prepared to receive them The attention of builders and those who contemplate building is directed to this matter |
