Show THE STREET NAMES It was expected that the inauguration of ibo new council would be followed by many ool propositions The Mormons have had Ontrol of this city nearly fortythree ears They founded it they laid it out hey built it and during all the time of its jxistence up to two weeks ago they have nanaged its public affairs It is conceded among fairminded men aud intelligent ones that management has been reasonably reason-ably successful The plan is the admira ion of everybody and strangers who visit as never tire of the characteristic beauty of the place There are some people however Aho are so narrow of mind within whose Jkulls the gray matter is so scarce and of such poor quality that they are unable to onceive it possible for a Mormon to do anything well The most praiseworthy act if performed by a Mormon is to their way of thinking something vile They would obliterate all evidence of the existence exist-ence upon earth of Mormons and would make everything done by the Saints criminal The first of the fool propositions to come before the council is one to change the names of the streets and those who present pre-sent it suggest a scheme of nomenclature that is so ridiculous as to be laughable It must have amused the members of the council if they gave the matter any attention atten-tion while the plan was being unfolded it will certainly amuse the public and we are not certain that a popular petition will not go in to the legislature asking for an appropriation appro-priation with which to complete the territorial territor-ial insane asylum It would be difficult to conceive a better plan for naming the streets of Salt Lake than that which was adopted at tie beginning begin-ning It is simple and easily understood No city in the country has a better or more comprehensive scheme If one knows the points of the compass he can without inquiring in-quiring or difficulty go from one given point to another the whole system of names being so plain and simple The only incentive to change is the fact that the naming was by a Mormon council coun-cil If a Liberal council had given the names the few fanatic simpletons who propose pro-pose a change would applaud the system heartily though they might be incapable of understanding it We are quite certain that If a Mormon council had adopted some of the schemes that have been proposed every Intelligent Gentile and all Mormons would have complained and been justified in it THE HERALD cannot conceive that the new council is so foolishly fanatic as some of its political constituents We cannot think that the councilmen will interfere with and change a street naming scheme which has been in existence from the first and is generally conceded to be plain simple sim-ple and easily understood just because the scheme was not devised and adopted by their political partisans Men may be jpiteful as individuals but they cannot afford af-ford as officials to be governed by petty spite |
