| Show THE SCHOOL TAX Action Taken by the Board of Education Last Night IT IS REDUCED TO HALF A MILL Superlntemlant Stewart States the Situation and the levy is Reduced by a Unanimous Vote The board of education held a special meeting yesterday evening for the purpose of considering the question of the recent levy of city school tax made by that body The members present were Messrs Pyper Young Kelson Newman Armstrong Arm-strong Snow Mitchner Colbath and Johnson John-son Vice President Nelson presiding An invitation had been extended to Superintendent Su-perintendent W M Stewart to be present and in response to the invitation the county superintendent of schools appeared before the board and represented that under the new school law the districts were not empowered to levy special taxes their only source of revenue being from the territorial apportionment which would be insufficient that therefore under the law lie was compelled to certify to the county court the amount of funds needed for the support of the county schools The levy of 1i mills made by the board of education would put 78000 into the treasury but this would not give the county sunicient funds to run its schools and it would become be-come necessary for the county to levy a tax which could not be done without the city paying the same percentage thus causing caus-ing the city to pay a larget3x which would not be needed to keep up the city schools It would require 75000 to run the schools and of this amount sixsevenths or about SG5000 would be collected from the city wn lo the remaining 10000 would be paid by the county Of this 75000 26250 would go to the county and 15750 to the cityAfter After due consideration Mr Johnson I moved that the levy of l1 mills previously made be withdrawd and that a levy of y mill be substituted which arrangement I ar-rangement it was estimated would produce the same result in the city while it would give the county an opportunity to raise sufficient school funds to supplement the territorial apportionment without imposing additional burden on the city The roll was called and the motion was carried unanimously On motion the new levy was ordered to be certified to the city assessor and the old levy withdrawn The securing of a seal was taken up by unanimous consent and referred to the finance committee Superintendent Stewart then presented to each of the members a copy of his circulars of the public schools of Salt Lake county containing course of study suggestions sug-gestions to teachers the school law and miscellaneous matters and a vote of thanks was tendered him Several other unimportant points were informally discussed after which the board adjourned and a committee meeting was held |
