| Show A Chance for a Prize Asan inducement for iutellegent reading I read-ing Joseph S Poery superintendent of county schools offers a prize of 10 to any I student in the public schools who by the close of the school in I year June will write and define the greatest number of words provided that these words are obtained in reading He advises each contestant to purchase a good dictionary and note book to write the definition of tho word in his own language and to frequently review his collection Each one is to be able to spell prodounce and correctly define the words Each student is urged to enter upon this contest for thereby be or she life long benefits therefrom Mr Peery has devised many plans for improving the system of county schools and each of them is being carried out with splendid success The Real Estate Exchange The second business mooting of tile real estate exchange met in the chamber of commerce rooms at 1180 am yesterday The meeting was called to order by President A B Patton and in the absence of O C Robinson C E Itrainard acted as secretary At a previous meeting held Friday last a list ofwants for property In certain portions por-tions of the citywaslaid before the meeting meet-ing Ths chqic requested at the time that lo > 1 f 1 ilQ the press not publish them but some of the reporters on certain city papers disregarded it The matter came up for discussion in the meeting yesterday C E Brainard thought the exchange could find no better way in advertising wants of any kind than through the columns of the newspapers and held that the reporters should be allowed al-lowed to take that part of the proceedings L H Mitchell spoke in the same strain and after some discussion it was moved that the members of the press use their own discretion in the matter but in all cases the name of the lister be omitted E S Morton made application for membership mem-bership in the exchange Referred to the committee on membership A report was read by Don Maguire from the committee appointed to secure signatures signa-tures for the 15000 bonus to be given to Syndicate offering to erect a smelter in i this city He stated that no work had been performed by tho committee but they all agreed that the eastern syndicate should secure their own power to run their works On motion tho committee was instructed to wire the syndicate that they were supposed sup-posed to use what power they considered best in the operation of their smelter be it by water steam electricity or otherwise C C Robinson treasurer of the exchange ex-change was instructed to proceed to collect membership fees after which the meeting adjourned until 11 30 this morning |
