Show DEATH OP JO MEADEK The Former Salt Laker Expires at Imuris Mexico Captain C T Meatier of this city received re-ceived the sad intelligence this morning of the death of his son Joseph B Meatier To the oldtimers of this country and alsO of Salt Lake this nors will come with peculiar force as Joe leader wasknown and loved by them all It has now been about six years smco he left this country to seek his fortune in the south but his memory is as fresh as though it had been only yesterday and his death will bo as sincerely mourned From the letter received by Mr Mender it would appear that his son had located in Imuris Sonora Mexicoabout a month before his death lie was there to commence some important business undertaking under-taking with one Harry L Coraway from whom tame tee news of his death For livedays before he had been complaining naB on the night before his death Uoraway and another friend named Sullivan visited him in his room They found him apparently ap-parently feeling much better and left him in the best of spirits looking forward along a-long but important business trip the next day At an early hour in the morning a servant found him deadin bed with a smile upon bis face as if his death had come iu the midst pt the most pleasant thoughts It was decided by the local authorities and physicians tnat nis ueatn was caused by apoplexy and he was buried at once that being the requirement of the Mexican law In that warm climate it is impossible to keep a body auj length ot time and the law requires burial within a very few hours As there was no Protestant minister in the vicinity the remains ol Mr Header were consigned to their final resting place without religious ceremonial save a short address byMr Coraway The funeral was held at 5 oclock in the afternoon of August Aug-ust 24 the day of his death It was attended by about three hundred peOple only twenty of them being Americans hut all uniting in paying the unfortunate man every possible triDute of respect The news was sent at once to his wife in Stone hate Mass andto his fattier irpibisplace thafcpreliminari message being followed by the letter of explanation today Joseph B Meaaer was fortysix years of age attho timef of his death having been boraon antucliet island in 1S44 When quite a young man became west and was earLy identified with the minine interest of the west For a number of years ho made his headquarters in Butte and Salt Lake and formed a circle of friends who will mourn his loss sincerely Ho leaves a wife and two bright boys to whom will be extended the sympathy of all who knew the husband and lather and can accordingly accord-ingly measure in some degree the extent of their bereavement ZJtitte InterJIoimtain |
