Show APING 01ILNA If tho Republican policy as embodied in the McKinley bill shall prevail in this country for another decide it is probable that the opening years of the twentieth century will present a Chinese spectacle in America It was at bottom an act of kindness one th on-e part of the governments of England France and the United States to force open the ports of China to theso nations in 1860 The people of China had many things they desired to sell to the people of other nations na-tions who had in turn many products the Chinese were in need of But the Chinese I government stood between the people of Ir r China and their wants refusing to permit them to sell their surplus to the people peo-ple of other nations The action of three enlightened governments in compelling com-pelling the governing power of China to desist from this oppression of povertyrid den millions of toilers in the celestial empire em-pire was a gain to tho people of that nation na-tion for which they have ever since been tp profoundly grateful The people of Europe offer us many articles ar-ticles i of comfort luxury and necessity that we can not produce to good advantage advant-age in this country if we will in return let them have some of the articles of human desire which they can not produce so advantageously ad-vantageously as we can By such an exchange ex-change the people of each division would be enriched and prospered Each community commun-ity would send its surpl s that could not all be used to good advantage at home and receive articles that could not well be produced pro-duced by itself There is noquestion of employing foreign abor l in this exchange any more than that foreigners employing our laborers Really we work for ourselves in this transaction and so do the foreigners Neither works for the benefit of the other nor does he ever tlink of tho foreigner nor care for him Each works for himself and to supply sup-ply his own wants with thn least possible labor Bnt here the United States government interferes to prevent this natural and beneficial bene-ficial exchange of products Both our own people and the foreigners suffer from this arbitrary meddling of the government and perhaps the foreigners eel the loss moro keenly than we do because we areVealthier to begin with than thev We are not wealthier than foreigner on account of anything our government has done for us but on account of the riches a vast and fertile continent rich in natural wealth placed in our hands by a beneficent Creator Already the different European governments I govern-ments talk of retaliation upon our country I and of forcing our government to open its ports to foreign commerce But the most disgusting spectacle in the worlds history for many centuries would be the forcible opening of our own ports by the more enlightened en-lightened nations and the freeing of our own people from the tyranny of a policy S that robs us as well as others America cannot afford to pattern after China |
