Show COAL We cannot conceive of a rumor the verification veri-fication of which would be more pleasing to the people of Salt Lake than the story that a bed of coal has been discovered on Antelope island It is not that this country is lacking in that necessary article for the city is close to some of the heaviest coal measures in America and railroads are running run-ning direct from coal fields into town Why the people would be pleased by the finding of coal on the island only fifteen or twenty miles distant is explained ex-plained when it is stated that the cheapest coal in this city for domestic use costs the consumer 525 per ton The people are told that they should be content with this price and not complain inasmuch as this same coal formerly cost 7 ES and even 10 a ton but there is not much consolation in this when times are hard money scarce and the mercury on familiar terms with the small figures on the thermometer scale Bituminous Bitumin-ous coal should not cost the consumer in Salt Lake more than H per ton and that would probably be the price if a bed of the article should be found on Antelope island That would be the price now if there were competition in the business instead of a combination by the railways which own and haul the coal However before exciting the public with suggestions of relief let us await further new from the island meantime doing some very earnest hoping that Antelope Ante-lope is a mountain of coal which has been hidden all these years to be discovered and developed now when most needed |
