Show BEDLOES ISLAND SINKING Engineers Say it Has Sank Eight FeetThe Goddess of liberty In Danger Special to THE HERALDExaminer Dispatch NEW YORK April 2It Is reported that Bedloes island is slowly sinking into the waters of New York bay A suspicion that such was the case has existed in the minds of those conversant with the locality for the past year An examination by a few practical engineers during the past few days confirms this belief and leaves no I doubt it is said that the statute of Liberty is eight feet lower than when erected Bedloes island is a rock and was supposed to be as enduring as the world Itself and would be were it not for the fact that it is the extreme of an enormous shelf underneath under-neath which is a bed of quicksand which extends across this sectioa east and west The Central railroad of New Jersey crosses it at one point and It has been the cause of an immense amount of trouble and work to that corporation to keep its track aboveground above-ground It is thought that the part of the shelf of rock which forms the island has broken off and the rock foundation of the statue is slowly but surely sinking out of sight in the waters of the bay Of course I the cause of the breaking of the rock shelf is not hard to toll that calamity was undoubtedly un-doubtedly caused by the immense weight of the stone pedestal on which the statute I is placed |
