Show AN OCEAN STEAMSHIP POOL An Agreement for the Regulation of Ocean Traffic Being Considered Special to THE HEBALD ExaminerCable LONDON April 2It is difficult to find out anything definite about the conference held a short time ago between two of tho German and some of the English lines running steamers to New York with a view to establish an agreement or what perhaps may be moreproperly called a trust for the regulation of ocean traffic But another and more general meeting has been arranged at Antwerp for something this month which will probably result in important announcements The combination combina-tion can hardly bring about any advances in freight rates unless the small lines running from London to Liverpool are taken into the scheme but it may result in a considerable advance for passenger rates on the faster steamers It costs a lot of money to run an ocean greyhound This summer there will be three more of them afloat and the record is sure to be lowered The City of Paris before her misfortune had not been pushed to anything like her best speed When she made her fastest westward run her speed was purposely dropped from 22 knots an hour to 14 knots an hour when the vessel was within 300 miles of Fire Island light Bets have been made hereby here-by experienced men that the City of Paris would lower the record to 5 days and 14 hours before next winter |
